Friends, we need to be honest and we need to be faithful.
This has been the most challenging bell-ringing season we have ever faced. For years, our kettles have been staffed primarily by our older generation, with younger and middle generations stepping in to help fill the gaps. That balance no longer exists.
Because most people are working during the day, we have already reduced hours. We hoped Saturdays and the week of Christmas, when students are out of school, would be fully covered. Unfortunately, even those times remain unfilled.
Here is the hard truth. We cannot sustain this.
My family cannot cover all the hours. Our elderly volunteers, many 75 and older, are stepping in again and again to carry a burden they should not have to bear alone.
Scripture reminds us that faith without works is dead (James 2:17). The proof is in the kettle. When someone is there ringing, people give. The generosity is there. The community support is there. The impact of The Salvation Army in our community is real and life changing.
But if no one is there to ring, to show up, to smile, to bring Christmas cheer for even one hour, we cannot continue. Because of this reality, we are already shutting down locations and reducing hours even further.
This is not said in frustration, but in truth and stewardship. We need the body to show up. One hour of your time can directly help feed families, keep the lights on, and offer hope to neighbors in need.
We are open to suggestions, but if the suggestion is more hours, then we also need commitments. We cannot move forward on good intentions alone.
If God is placing this on your heart, please respond.
If you have been waiting for a nudge, this is it.
Thank you for caring, sharing, praying, and stepping forward.
