Reality and communism do not mix well.
- KL
Communism didn't lose to an ideology. It lost to reality.
You can force people into a system. You can't force the system to work. So you build an authoritarian class to keep it running. Then you murder a few million people who resist. Then a few million more. And at some point, the people running the whole thing look around and notice, the capitalists have boats, blue jeans, and Diet Coke. And they start wondering why.
So they sprinkle in a little capitalism. Then a little more. And before long, people are getting paid for actual work, spending money on actual things, and the whole command economy quietly collapses under the weight of its own contradictions.
The Cold War wasn't won by NATO or nuclear deterrence. It was won by the fact that free markets actually produce things people want.
The best explanation of the 20th century came from Reddit, and it fits in one paragraph.
