The summer of 1914 was a time of unrest at the Burden Iron Co. Employees refused to work after the company cut their wages. As the work stoppage continued, various influential individuals in Troy intervened, concerned that the Burdens could decide to abandon the mill with major economic consequences for the city. Mayor Connie Burns and Chamber of Commerce President Charles Stone urged the men to return to work. Even Father Dempsey of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church addressed the issue during his October 5 sermon. He said both sides had rights in the matter, and it would be a severe blow to the city if Burden Iron Co. left. He said he wasn’t taking sides and urged the congregation to pray for the resumption of work. A few days later the Burden workers returned to work, on the company’s terms.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of Thursday's Gala honoring Bill Sage and son Kevin Sage of Sage Brothers Painting Co. Bill spoke for the two when he thanked the Gateway for the honor, and he also recounted how he initially regarded the Troy Gas Holder House as merely a warehouse, but came to appreciate its historical significance and was honored to be able to open it up for various community events that took advantage of the unique space. Donna Done also received an award for her tireless volunteer work for the Gateway.

Anyone looking for a water-powered grist mill? The mill was originally built in Schaghticoke and operated for many years before being decommissioned, disassembled, and the pieces taken to Massachusetts. Just assemble and add water.

Ashfield Mills Inc., a Massachusetts-based nonprofit, is seeking a new owner for a 19th-century grist mill originally constructed in Schaghticoke.
