In 1972 Peter and Lonhilt Klose were encouraged by friends and neighbors to create a swim and tennis club. After conducting an informal survey to establish interest among Troy residents, an association was founded and several acres of land next to Schroeder Elementary were acquired from real estate developers Samuel Frankel and his son, Stewart. Political and economic difficulties were over come w

ith assistance from steadfast supporters and Beachwood Recreation Association opened three years later on June 22, 1975. In 1978 Beachwood joined the Northwest Suburban Swim League (NSSL). An association of 13 swim clubs located in the northwest suburbs of Detroit. The Klose family remained members of the club until the graduation of the youngest of five children and their subsequent move to California in 1985. Peter and Lonhilt Klose recognized that Beachwood's success was made possible by the major contributions from the following founding board members:
