TRADITIONS, TRENDS, AND TRUTH

As Christians, how do we make the decisions that shape our lives? How do we decide which direction is best? There are many voices in the world speaking every day, encouraging us to follow the path to the left or the path to the right, what to buy, what to eat, who to marry, which job to take. As a church, there are also many choices. So how do we make godly choices? The prophet Samuel faced a similar dilemma, and perhaps our answer can be found in his.

Israel wanted a king. They were not satisfied to be led by God. They wanted a king so that they could be like all the other nations. Afterall, it was tradition for each nation to have a king, so God gave them Saul. However, Saul was disobedient and God rejected him as king. In I Samuel 16:1-13 we read that Samuel was mourning over the loss of Saul as King, but he was instructed to stop mourning and go anoint a new king from the sons of Jesse. Jesse brought his sons before Samuel one by one. As Samuel looked at Jesse’s firstborn, Eliab, he was convinced that he was surely the next king, but God does not see as we see. “So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Jesse brought his remaining sons before Samuel and the answer was the same for each, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Finally, Samuel asked if there were any other sons. David, who was watching his father’s sheep in the field, was brought before Samuel. “Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.”

When we are faced with an important decision, God doesn’t usually tell us everything. This might make us nervous, but it is part of the process of learning to trust God and follow Him. It’s easy to follow the traditions of men, and perhaps it is exciting to follow the latest trends, but if we are not following God, we are following the devil’s path. It’s easy to do what everyone else is doing, but often God calls us to go in a different direction. Samuel was tempted to make his decision based on outward appearance, but God looks on the inside. God looks at the heart.

What is a tradition? A tradition is a formalized system of beliefs, practices, customs, or values that a group of people pass down from one generation to another, while a trend is a current preference or a fad. Pastor Nathan defined it as “the latest and greatest!” Finally, what is truth? John 16:13 leads us not to a list of customs or the latest fad, but to the Holy Spirit who lives inside each believer. “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” If you are to follow truth, you must learn to hear the voice of God. God’s voice is the voice of the Holy Spirit who is in complete unity with the Father and Jesus. God’s truth is not an opinion; it is the final word. Isaiah 55:6-9 once again counsels us in the ways of God. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

If we are going to walk in truth, we must be grounded in the Word of God, and we must constantly stay in the Word. We cannot be afraid of correction because traveling down a wrong path can mean we are missing out on what God has for us. Being on the wrong path can even jeopardize our own life. Romans 8:14 admonishes us to seek God’s direction. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

Pastor Nathan went on to share some of his personal testimony about his move to Virginia reiterating that God often leads without revealing the entire picture. It is called walking by faith. Graduating from Rhema Bible Training Center in 2001, Pastors Nathan and Jill were eager to begin serving God; however, no doors were opened to them. Pastor Nathan shared that he contemplated becoming a welder or a teacher. Finally, in 2002 he made the decision to resume his job as a coal miner in Kentucky. Knowing God had called him to preach, he cried out to the Lord
.I don’t care where you send me, I’ll go. Shortly thereafter he was offered the job of pastor in a Baptist church. Surely God could not be serious! A Baptist church would not want a spirit-filled pastor, but God said, “Do it!” Many family, friends, and fellow graduates questioned his decision, but God said, “Do it!” Often, God will test our faithfulness. After 5 years, God told Pastor Nathan to resign from the Baptist church. Resigning meant giving up half his salary. Didn’t God know he had small children to support? Pastor Nathan then followed the voice of the Holy Spirit who told him to submit his resume to an Assembly of God church which would not typically hire Rhema graduates, but Pastor Nathan obeyed and was hired. He recalled that he never missed a Sunday in the transition. Again, others questioned his choice, but Pastor Nathan followed God’s leading. Remember, God doesn’t ask us to figure it out with our mind. Our part is to hear and obey. Fifteen years later, God once again instructed Pastors Nathan and Jill to resign from the Assembly of God church. They had no idea where they would go, but they sold their home and followed the voice of the Holy Spirit. Their journey led them to Florida, Ohio, Kentucky, and finally to Troy, Virginia, which they now call home.

Likewise, Jesus did not follow traditions. He often faced opposition for breaking traditions such as healing on the Sabbath. Jesus did what He saw His Father do. (John 5:16-20) Jesus did revolutionary things. Do you have decisions to make? Don’t get caught up in the traditions of men or follow the latest trends. Instead, begin to seek the Spirit of Truth on the inside of you and allow Him to lead you. Walk by faith, not by sight. Stay in the Word of God and allow the Spirit of Truth to guide you to your destiny.

HOLY GHOST AND FIRE!

Celebrating Pentecost Sunday, Pastor Nathan reminded us this week that 50 days following the resurrection, the final promise Jesus made was fulfilled. John the Baptist spoke of this marvelous promise which is recorded in Matthew 3:11. “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.” Jesus even went so far as to say it is to our advantage that He would go away so that the Holy Spirit, the comforter, would come. In fact, Jesus instructed His disciples in Acts 1:4-5, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift He promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” This gift wasn’t just for the early church. The Holy Spirit was sent to live inside us. He still carries the same fire today, and fire is not a bad thing. The fire is sent to purify us, for there are some things in our lives which need to be burned out. Wherever the Holy Ghost resides, there is also His fire. We need that fire in our lives. Being baptized in water is important, but there is also a baptism in the Holy Ghost and fire!

Pastor Nathan went on to share how he received the baptism in the Holy Ghost at the age of 21 after being radically saved. That fire inside gave him the courage to live his life serving God. In Acts 2:2-3 NLT we read of the first infilling. “ On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.” When the Holy Ghost fell, holy fire sat on each of them. They spoke in languages given by God. Even today, God wants to use us. The Spirit of God can still use us to speak His language. Speaking and praying in the Spirit can align us with God’s will.

Do you want everything that God has for you? Are you willing to surrender? God can work with someone like that. Many people always keep their heart guarded, but if we will open our heart to God, He will heal us and fill us. He will use us for His glory. Peter was a prime example. In Acts 2:14 we see a change in Peter. He went from denying that He even knew Christ, to preaching a message in which 3000 souls were saved! Peter was transformed by God’s fire. Peter was a different man. Surely Peter regretted denying Jesus 3 times, but after being transformed by the Holy Ghost and fire, he never looked back. Peter never mentioned his failures again. You see, the fire of God has the power to set us free. Some people become offended because of some incident in church and never come back. How much better would our lives be if we could forget every offense. We need to have Holy Ghost amnesia!

The fire of God will also give us boldness. Sometimes we just need to forget about ourselves, forget what others think of us, and allow God’s fire to do its work. The Body of Christ spends too much time listening to the devil who wants to stop us from fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives. The fire of God gives us the boldness to dance and shout, to speak God’s Word, and tell others of God’s goodness. Boldness brings a display of power, and be assured that God never forgets what we do for Him. Jesus told us we would need the Holy Spirit and fire, so then why would we think we can do what God has called us to do without Him? Jesus took 12 ordinary men and changed the world. Jesus has also called us to change the world, but to fulfill what God has called us to do, we will need the Holy Ghost and fire! The first day of Pentecost was marked by a seeking, a longing, and a desire that held 120 believers together in one place, in one accord. May we also be faithful to seek and desire the fire of God in our lives.

FAITH VERSUS UNBELIEF

Pastor Nathan began his message today in Mark 6:1-6. “Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So, they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.”

In thinking of faith and unbelief, which one pleases God? The obvious answer is faith. If faith pleases Him, unbelief must displease Him and will lead to sin if not corrected. Unbelief happens when your environment, surroundings, or what is familiar to you becomes greater than your personal revelation of God’s Word. Jesus didn’t become offended at them, but He did marvel at their unbelief. Every day we have a choice. We can believe what our environment says or we can believe what God says. We must realize, when we are born again, our spirit is made new (2 Corinthians 5:17), but our mind is not saved. (James 1:21) Our new life in Christ was never meant to stop at conversion. Therefore, it is necessary for the Christian to renew his mind continually with the Word, so we won’t dishonor God with unbelief. In other words, an un-renewed mind is the root cause of lack of faith or unbelief. Our heart, mind, and body must be aligned with God’s truth in order to live by faith. We are commanded, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2) Many try to justify certain behaviors since Jesus did not directly address them, but part of renewing your mind is realizing that JESUS IS THE WORD! “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. . .” (John 1:14) If it is mentioned in the Word, Jesus instructed us in it!

Why were the people in Jesus’ hometown offended by Him? They knew Him. They knew His family. They knew where He grew up. Because of all this familiarity (what has always been), the people of Nazareth allowed their minds to rebel against His ministry. Familiarity, which is based on human reasoning, logic, and presumption will always shut down faith and God’s miracle working power. Even Mary, the mother of Jesus, had opportunity for unbelief. She didn’t understand how what the angel said to her could happen, but she did not allow her mind to lead her into unbelief. She believed the words of the LORD rather than what her mind could grasp. It is the same for us. God must be the most important thing in our lives. We must honor Him and His Word above everything else, even when it may not seem humanly possible. Our environment doesn’t determine how big or small we are. It does not determine what we can or cannot do. Our mind must be renewed. The Bible says, Jesus endured much contradiction (verbal resistance, contentious opposition, strife, hostility) from many people in His earthly ministry. (Hebrews 12:3) The most important thing to remember here is that Jesus did not quit but finished His race with joy! When we compare our situation to what Jesus endured, our perspective changes. God has called us to live a life of faith and win. (Hebrews 10:38) In this life we will face some of the same contradiction also (don’t let it catch you off guard), but Jesus said we should be of good cheer for He has overcome the world. (John16:33) Instead of giving up mentally when faced with fierce opposition, let’s keep renewing our minds with the Word so we can follow the same path of victory that Jesus did!

Pastor Nathan concluded his message recalling the expedition of Lewis and Clark. These men spent the majority of their journey traveling up the Missouri River. Much of their trip was spent poling, pushing, and pulling their boat upstream. Without their pioneer spirit, the West would have never been claimed by the United States and enjoyed by its citizens today. He likened this journey to a life of faith. Jesus endured the cross because He was thinking of us
for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame
(Hebrews 12:2). We want Jesus to do a mighty work at Open Door! We don’t want to be limited by our surroundings. We want all of our inheritance in Christ! We want to be world changers for Jesus! This is why we must rise up in our renewed mind, answer every opposition to what God’s Word says, and live a life of faith for greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world! (I John 4:4)

Happy Mother’s Day! We at Open Door Church pray that every mother would realize that our Lord Jesus Christ loves you. The Word says that God loves us as much as He loves Jesus, so I don’t think it would be wrong to conclude that Jesus loves each mother as if you were His own!

We were blessed to have Pastor Jill bring our Mother’s Day message today, and she did a great job. Pastor Jill began with Luke 1:45 NKJV. “Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.” As believers, we have things which God has placed in our hearts, promises that we hold onto, and Pastor Jill reminded us to not let go of those promises. Just because they don’t happen when we think they should, does not mean that they are forgotten by God. Even when we seem to be going through a storm, even though we hear the wind and feel the waves against us, we must stand firm and refuse to give up!

Correspondingly, we must watch what comes out of our own mouth. When we continually ask God questions like why, we are blaming God because the answer has not come when we thought it should. Instead, we must keep our eyes on the Lord, and He will take care of the rest. When we continually trust Him, He will bring us to a place of peace, and the devil cannot touch us. Pastor Jill relayed a dream she had during a particularly troubling time in her life. She saw a tornado surrounding her and Pastor Nathan with dark matter swirling around, but when she was able to look up through the top of the tornado, she could see God. When she kept her eyes on Him, the wind became so calm that not even a single hair on her head was moving, but she reminded us, we are the ones who must keep our eyes in the right place.

Joshua 1:8 instructs us, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” It is up to us to put the Word before our eyes and meditate upon it. We do not have to wait until we are under attack. Pastor Jill encouraged us to be ready to attack the enemy before he attacks us. Often the devil attacks us and watches to see what we will do. It is our responsibility to tell him where he belongs – under our feet! He is a defeated foe; Jesus defeated Him on our behalf!

Mark 11:23-24 reminds us of the importance of our words. So, what are you saying? Instead of saying, “Look at those prices,” you can declare boldly that in Christ, I have more than enough. My kids will never go hungry. God is my provider. Are you saying what the Word says? Remember, you will have whatever you SAY. A weak Christian will just say what the world says, but we must stop speaking death over our spouse, over our children, over our house or our car. God has given us the measure of faith. (Romans 12:3) John 15:7 says, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and IT SHALL be done for you.” The Word of God encourages us to ask and promises “I will do it!” It is always our season to be blessed, but don’t forget that faith and patience work hand in hand. What we say while patiently waiting for the promise is vital. Keep God’s Word in your mouth. Keep praise on your lips!

A prophecy is a statement that says what is going to happen in the future, especially one based on belief or divine revelation rather than on existing facts. What are you saying about your kids? What are you saying about your grandkids? What are you saying about your job? What are you saying about your church? What are you meditating upon? Learn to hook your mouth to your born-again spirit and resist the temptation to speak negative words no matter how it may look in the natural. Our Heavenly Father is a good dad! He desires to prove Himself to us. He is the God of the impossible if we will only believe!

In conclusion, what are you believing God for? What has God told you, you already have? What scriptures are you standing on? Are you fully persuaded? Remember, what you say matters. Your faith is attached to your words, so begin to put the Word to work!

DRIVING OUT THE GIANTS OF UNBELIEF

Pastor Nathan’s message today was based upon a man named Caleb in Joshua 14:6-12. When the time came for Canaan to be divided out to the tribes of Israel, Caleb, from the tribe of Judah, came to Joshua to claim his inheritance. He asked Joshua to remember God’s promise to him through Moses. He recalled at the age of 40 that he and Joshua were sent to explore the land of Canaan. Upon returning, Caleb gave an honest report, but the others who went with them became frightened upon entering the Promised Land and gave a very different report. Caleb recalled that he followed the Lord wholeheartedly, so that day Moses promised him, “The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.” (Verse 9) Forty-five years had now passed, and Caleb proclaimed, “Today I am 85 years old. I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then. So, give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said.” (Verses 10-12) Caleb went on to do just that!

Just like Caleb, we have a rich inheritance in Christ ready to be claimed. However, because the devil and his cohorts still roam the earth, there are giants that we will face today. They are not physical giants like in biblical times, but they are unseen evil spirits that use monstrous circumstances to strike fear in the hearts of believer, tempting them to abandon their faith, and turn away from God. Both individually and collectively as a church body, we can drive out the giants of unbelief from our domain! So, what can we learn from this man of God who never gave up?

1. Caleb remembered what God promised Him. Do you? God has written His promised in His Word, but the devil desires to keep you from possessing them. God took note of Caleb’s faithfulness. “But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.” Numbers 14:24 Caleb walked upon the land before he possessed it. We must also “walk the land” to know what God has given us.

2. At the age of 40, Caleb gave an honest, faith-filled report, along with Joshua, while the other spies discouraged the people with a fear-filled report. (Numbers 13:30) Caleb chose to align his heart and mouth with God’s Word while the others allowed the fear of the giants to fill their hearts and words with unbelief. Their unbelief soon turned into rebellion as they began speaking evil against Moses and Aaron, the leaders God had given them. They put more faith in what they could see than in the promise of God. (Numbers 14:1-2) They even went so far as to wish that they had died in Egypt. Sometimes we hold the key to our own miracle. The children of Israel saw miracle after miracle. They saw the goodness of God. They saw the greatness of God. They experienced His power. They saw firsthand that God was trustworthy. They walked through the Red Sea on dry ground. They saw things they had never seen before, and yet they threw it all away because of fear and unbelief. It is our responsibility to hold on, to hide promises of God in our heart, so we do not commit the same sin of unbelief. (Psalms 119:11, Hebrews 4:1) Unbelief will cost you your inheritance.

3. Caleb wholeheartedly followed the LORD. While others refused to believe, Caleb refused to let go of God’s promise to him. Genesis 6 recounts that “the sons of God (fallen angels) saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.” Because of this, “There were giants in the earth in those days.” These giants in those days terrorized the earth, yet Caleb was unafraid to drive them from the land which God had promised him. His faith was not in his own strength, but in God’s strength. Caleb declared that he was as strong at 85 years of age as when he was 40. He maintained his confession “We are well able to overcome!” (Numbers 13:30) Holding fast to the promise of God kept him strong all those years. Caleb’s faith said, “Give me my mountain! If there are giants there, I will drive them out.”

So, what is our inheritance? Certainly, it is all the promises of God in Christ, but more importantly, our inheritance is PEOPLE. (Joshua 14:9) Our inheritance is the PEOPLE we will win for Him. The stakes are very high, for all the angels in Heaven rejoice over one precious soul won for the Kingdom of God. With such a costly treasure on the line, we must not allow the enemy to steal our inheritance. We must drive out every giant and possess the land God has given to us. The amount of our inheritance that we receive depends on how much territory that we are willing to tread upon and claim. We must stand firm in Christ and echo the words of Caleb, “I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said.” What is your giant? Fear, poverty, addiction, cancer, sickness, guilt, unforgiveness, bitterness, pride, failed relationships? Whatever giant you face, when you speak God’s Word, the enemy flees. Guard your heart, open your mouth, and become a giant slayer!

Hebrews 10:23 (KJV) Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;).

Romans 8:37 (KJV) Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

04/27/2026

The world we live in is a busy place, and sometimes it’s easy to feel like the proverbial hamster on a wheel. Many people go from their job, to keeping up a home, to taking the kids to activities, and then much of our “relaxation” is scrolling through our phones. It’s no wonder many people today feel tired, stressed, fearful, and full of anxiety; however, this is not what God intended for those that belong to Him, for there is a rest that God speaks of and a peace that He provides. There is a rest and a peace in God, and that is the place God calls us to.

Pastor Nathan explored these vital parts of our faith in his message today. Reading from Hebrews 3:15 to Hebrews 4:3, we see that the children of Israel left Egypt, led by Moses, but they never made it to the Promised Land. Instead, they wandered in the desert 40 years. Because of their unbelief, they could not enter into God’s rest. Pastor Nathan explained that they never entered in because they allowed the things around them to get to them. This resulted in stress, fear, turmoil, and complaining. Hebrews 4:2-3 goes on to say that the Word preached did not profit them because they did not mix it with faith, and even though the work was already finished, they chose not to enter in.

As Christians, we are on a journey with God, and He has a destiny for each of us. Sometimes, we must follow by faith and sometimes the unknown can make us feel uncomfortable. Anxiety is often a fear of the unknown, but God never calls us to do something we can accomplish without Him. Following God requires trust. We follow God’s will with peace and rest, not complaint and fear. (Hebrews 11:6)

It is God who calls us, and He has given us peace for our assignment. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11 Some have said, you have never really obeyed God until you have done something you didn’t want to do. We obey God out of love. God has a plan for each of us individually but also for churches and ministries. In His plan, there is peace. If you are feeling tension, stress, or anxiety, these things are not from God. His plan should bring peace and should be something we look forward to. If you are struggling to follow, begin by faith and then you will wind up in the Spriit. God will meet you there.

Psalm 85:8 shows us the power of vision. “I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for He will speak peace unto His people, and to His saints
” When God takes us someplace, there will be peace. Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. If we are experiencing worry and stress, our outer man is likely in control. The works of the flesh indicate how the devil feels, while the fruit of the Spirit describes how God feels, full of love, joy, and peace. God never desires to see His children fearful and depressed. God has ordained peace to go with all that He has called us to do! John 14:27, Isaiah 32:17-18

Will we face challenges in life? Yes! It takes God’s strength to do what He has called us to do, but “The Lord will give strength unto His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.” Psalm 29:11 It takes the power of the Holy Ghost to follow His plan. “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” Romans 15:13 Lastly, it takes living in God’s Kingdom to enter into the rest and peace of God. “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” Romans 14:17 Jesus has done the work, but it is up to us to enter in. May the peace of God rule in our hearts and minds through Jesus Christ, as we fulfill our destiny in the Kingdom of God!
