Have you taken a recent stroll through our picturesque cemetery, noticing the trees have been labeled? We extend gratitude to the volunteers who have worked tirelessly to identify these trees, noting their Latin and English names. Take a moment to appreciate the scenery as well as history and you may find yourself standing under a Quercus Bicolor or Swamp White Oak. Joyce Kilmer’s poem Trees starts with the line, “I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree.”

James J. Child, deceased 1925, rests at Oakwood Cemetery. After being born in Brooklyn, he made Troy his home in his early years and was educated in Lansingburgh. Childs working life started with a leading coal merchant, which laid the groundwork for his future enterprise, the J. J. Child Coal Company. Throughout the years, Child held esteemed positions like President of the J. J. Child Steamer Company and Director of the People’s Bank of Lansingburgh. His dedication to community was evident in his roles as Director of Samaritan Hospital and Trustee of the Troy Orphan Asylum. This remarkable monument marks the final resting place of James and his family, representing the numerous outstanding monuments in our cemetery. Every stone tells a story.

We were delighted to welcome back Michael Barrett, local historian, who shared compelling accounts of area residents who served in the Civil War. The audience was deeply engaged by the stories of those who suffered injuries and returned to pursue diverse careers as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield. Michael has identified 878 Civil War veterans buried at Oakwood, each with a unique story. Notably, one of the recipients of the Medal of Honor was featured. Visitors are invited to join a tour to discover the fascinating stories of those laid to rest here.
