Kansas State University researchers are inviting Kansas landowners and land managers to participate in a short survey about how county rules, community expectations, and changing weather influence decisions to use prescribed fire.
The survey is open to Kansans who currently use prescribed burning, have used it in the past, or are interested in it.

The survey takes 10–15 minutes, participation is voluntary, and responses are confidential and anonymous.

If you haven't considered the importance of soil temperature before planting your garden crops, K-State horticulture expert Matt McKernan says you should. Soil temperature affects germination of many vegetable garden crops.

A crabgrass pre-emergent herbicide prevents annual grass seeds from developing into mature plants. These products create a barrier in the upper layer of soil that stops crabgrass seedlings as they begin to germinate. Because pre-emergent herbicides only work before the w**d emerges, timing is very important. Once crabgrass is visible in the lawn, these products will no longer be effective.

In Kansas, crabgrass typically begins germinating in late April to early May as soil temperatures warm. A helpful indicator for proper timing is the blooming of redbud trees, which signals that soil temperatures are approaching the range where crabgrass seeds begin to germinate.

As always, read the product label carefully and follow all instructions.
