Last night, members of the CEO team attended the New York State Writers Institute season-opening conversation at UAlbany, where singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant spoke with WAMC Northeast Public Radio's Joe Donahue about Cabinet of Wonder, her new multimedia early childhood enrichment project.

Ms. Merchant spent three years volunteering as an artist-in-residence in CEO's Head Start classrooms, sharing music and poetry with hundreds of preschool-age children. During those years, she was writing music and developing ideas that would eventually grow into Cabinet of Wonder.

Seeing images from CEO's classrooms projected on the stage last night was a wonderful reminder of what can grow from creativity, relationships and joyful learning.

Today, Cabinet of Wonder is bringing music, poetry, storytelling and the arts to young children far beyond Troy, with free resources available to Head Start educators and families across the country.

We are incredibly grateful to Natalie for the time, creativity and care she shared with CEO's children, families and staff, and proud that something nurtured in our Head Start classrooms is now reaching young learners nationwide.

At Head Start, every milestone matters. Children build confidence, develop new skills, form friendships, and prepare for the next step in their learning journey. Our programs support the whole child through hands-on learning, social and emotional development, school readiness, and family support.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, whose legacy reaches far beyond the music so many of us know and love.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, millions of children have experienced the excitement of receiving a book of their very own in the mail each month, helping build a love of reading from the very beginning.

Earlier this year, CEO was honored to host Assemblymember John McDonald and United Way of the Greater Capital Region as they announced new funding to help expand the Imagination Library across the Capital Region. As part of the visit, Assemblymember McDonald spent time reading with children in our Head Start programs.

Today, 482 children served by CEO are eligible to participate in the Imagination Library. We are proud to help connect families with a program that puts books directly into the hands and homes of young children and supports the early literacy and school readiness work that is so important to our mission.

We are grateful for the extraordinary legacy Dolly Parton leaves behind and for the many children whose lives will continue to be touched by it.
