Troy-Pike Habitat for Humanity Seeking Family for House Build

Troy-Pike Habitat for Humanity is now accepting applications from families wishing to partner with the organization to build and own a home.

Requirements for eligibility can be found on the website: (www.troypikehabitat.com).

The houses are sold to the partner family with zero-interest mortgage payments that are handled through Troy Bank & Trust. Homes are constructed using volunteer labor, donated materials and funds, and when completed the homeowners’ mortgage payments are recycled to support the construction of future Habitat for Humanity homes.

Applications can be downloaded through the Troy-Pike Habitat website, www.troypikehabitat.com, or picked up at the drop box located at 210 Montgomery Street in Troy.

Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to attend information sessions to learn more about the application process, including necessary documentation. Two sessions are scheduled at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 401 West College Street in Troy. The times and days are:

6 p.m., Monday, July 8
11 a.m., Saturday, July 13

Application day will be held at Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 725 Elba Highway, on Saturday, August 24. Interested applicants should arrive at 8 a.m. Applicants will be interviewed in the order they arrive. Applications must be fully completed and include all supporting documents.
Habitat’s path to homeownership is an important and in-depth process, requiring hard work, time, and dedication. But this helps to ensure the long-term success of Habitat homeowners. The eligibility criteria include:
1. The prospective family must be living in substandard housing conditions such as poor heating, plumbing problems, leaky roofs, etc.
2. The family must have the ability to pay. Habitat houses are not given to families. A source of income is required, and a zero-interest mortgage is provided to the family through Habitat for Humanity.
3. The family must agree to put in ‘sweat equity’ in the home. Each partner family is required to work at least 200 hours per adult applicant toward the construction of their home and/or other Habitat projects.
4. The family must have lived in Pike County for at least one year.
Troy-Pike Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people from all walks of life to build and renovate houses for people in need. The organization has built 17 houses in Pike County, providing decent, affordable housing for families who need a hand up, not a handout.

This amazing woman is on the board of the Troy Pike Habitat for Humanity and works closely with our Habitat families!

Our spotlight on the amazing business women in our community features Ouida Gandy, owner of OuiCare, LLC.

With a background in nursing, Ouida Gandy is a natural fit for her work with OuiCare, her company that provides support for people with varying abilities.  “We never say disability,” said Ouida.  “Everyone has abilities, and we work to find those in everyone we work with.”  OuiCare, LLC, contracts with Medicare & Medicaid to work with individuals and support their families. “Actually, I can’t say that I work – this is what I love to do, so it doesn’t seem like work,” said Ouida. But she is quick to say that it is hard. “This career isn’t for everyone.  I think it is more of a calling. We work hard to see the potential in everyone and those clients we serve and support make this work special,” said Ouida.  OuiCare, LLC, currently operates 5 residential homes in Troy that are staffed 24/7. Other of their clients live in their own homes and just receive supportive help (grocery shopping, trips to the doctor, etc.) from OuiCare, LLC.
Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Ouida and her husband, Earvie, were transferred to Fort Rucker, (now Fort Novosel), and decided to remain in the area after his military service was over.  Earvie serves as the pastor at the Greater Troy Church of God. Both of them serve on the Troy Pike Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors.
“Our clients become family,” said Ouida.  “It’s easier to see potential when you see someone as family.”
