To document the culture, politics, fears, heroics and courage that gave birth to a free India. To enable the world to reflect on the nuances of the freedom movement, the atrocities of the occupying force, the discipline of Brit

An internship opportunity to India this spring/summer from Arise Free India (AFI)

Arise Free India (AFI) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit based in Michigan. AFI is recording and archiving personal stories of those who contributed to India’s independence movement. Goal of AFI is to document and preserve the personal stories and accounts of these brave individuals, octogenarians many of them, who made history with their involvement in the Indian freedom movement before time mutes their voices forever. AFI intends to make a series of documentary films connecting their stories for a renewed, contemporary examination of the events leading to India’s independence in 1947.

This year, AFI is excited to introduce a sponsorship opportunity for individuals including college students to visit India and record a piece of Indian history. In spring/summer of 2014, AFI is offering up to 6 intern sponsorships. If you are between jobs/careers or a college student or stay-at-home individual, this is an ideal opportunity to spend time in India and meet historic figures who shaped a nation. The intern(s) will spend between 5 and 7 weeks in select parts of India, work in a team of 2 and with help from India-based network of NGOs, interview freedom fighters.

To apply for these internships:
• Write an essay (minimum 250 words and not to exceed 500 words) on: To what extent would you go to achieve freedom of expression? Why?
• Submit the essay (pdf file format) by April 15, 2014 to [email protected]
• 1st wave of interns will travel to India between May 12 and June 30th 2014 (passport and visa is the intern’s responsibility)
• Be available for a phone and/or an in-person interview once your essay has been selected
• Individuals with familiarity with one or more Indian languages are preferred

Selected interns will participate in a 4-hour workshop. For more questions, email [email protected]
