Saturday 6/7/25, we had a great field day with TABA members. Learned from classes given by knowledgeable beekeepers, and we built swarm boxes. We all enjoyed the good company and tasty food.

On This Day in the History of Beekeeping, May 29, 1953

Image: A Specially designed bookplate given to Sir Edmund Hillary to honor his achievement.

Today in History, Beekeeper Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the 29,035-foot summit of Everest, becoming the first people to stand atop the world's highest mountain.

1953 was the year in which Mount Everest was climbed for the first time and climbed by a beekeeper - Sir Edmund Hillary. As there was no other body to do so the Bee Research Association (BRA) opened a fund for a commemorative presentation and a collection of bee books was duly given to the climber with a specially designed bookplate marking the achievement.

Did You Know?...

In 1852 the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India measured Everest's elevation as 29,000 feet above sea level. but the surveyors didn't think people would believe that so they added two feet to its elevation, making it 29,002 feet.

This figure remained the officially accepted height for more than one hundred years. In 1955 it was adjusted by a mere 26 feet to 29,028 (8,848 m).

Everest's current elevation of 29,035 feet is based on a GPS device implanted on the highest rock point under ice and snow in 1999 by an American expedition. The mountain is higher than 21 Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other.

Check those hive lids. Had one nuc lose a lid tonight. With the top feeder on, the bees weren’t able to propolize the lid.

Beyond the interesting hive type used in Japanese beekeeping. Check out the lift they use to bottom super the hives.
