No Words! 🖤✨

The DNPs of Color™ DNPs of Color Allen-Mahoney Gala in my hometown of Detroit was unforgettable!

First of all, EVERYONE showed up and showed OUT! 😂 The outfits, food, music, and stories were amazing, but the genuine love and support were even better!

It was an honor meeting Demetrius “DJ” Kirk, Maria Anita Salinas, Dr. Michael Williams, and Dr. Roberto Roman. Congratulations to fellow honorees Dr. Sandy Phan and Dr. Ethlyn McQueen-Gibson!

And my cheering section! Rita, Eve, Dr. Lyons, Dana, Dr. Jackie, and Dr. Temeka, Y’ALL WERE LOUD! 😂❤️ Nobody had to guess who came to support me!

But one moment really touched my heart.

Since learning about this award, I kept thinking, “I wish my momma could see me now.”

Then Dr. Kim Byas shared the story of his mother, Ella, from Alabama, who adopted children to give them a better future.

My momma’s name was Ella too. She was from Faunsdale, Alabama, and she adopted everybody in the neighborhood! 😂❤️

Two mothers named Ella. Both from Alabama. Both opening their hearts and homes to others.

Of all the stories I could have heard that night, THAT was the one. ❤️

In that moment, I felt like both Ellas were there watching their boys.

It reminded me of a question I’ve been reflecting on:

What do you want your legacy to be?

Legacy isn’t about titles, degrees, or awards. It’s about the lives we touch, the doors we open, and what we leave behind.

Our mothers understood that long before we did. ❤️

Apparently, Atlanta is next in October 2027! I’m officially accepting donations for my travel fund! 😂😂

That’s a wrap on the 2026 DNPs of Color™ DNPs of Color of Convention! 🙌🏽💙

What an incredible few days of learning, connecting, and celebrating one another!

Rhonda J. Manns, MBA, BSN, RN, CCM did a fabulous job with the Hack-a-thon! I somehow fit the criteria for two of her examples. I think Temeka HW ,Dr. Temeka Horton - Washington, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, GCNE told them to use me as an example of running myself into the ground. 😂

The session “Reclaiming Our Narratives: Storytelling, Legacy, and Healing” was one of the most vulnerable and powerful sessions I’ve attended all year.

Two questions stuck with me:
“What do you want your legacy to be?”
“What legacy will you actually leave?”

I also met a Detroit nursing powerhouse, Dr. Bridget A. Leonard DNP, RN, MSN/MBA-HCM, CRRN, NEA-BC, CNEpv, and even won a raffle gift!

What I loved most was the atmosphere. Everyone was welcoming! It felt like a family reunion, with people of ALL hues, backgrounds, and experiences coming together. That made it even more special!

As I reflected on those conversations about legacy, I thought about something the older generations used to tell us growing up.

“Don’t you be out there showing your colors!”

As I got older, I understood those words came from survival, not shame. Our elders were protecting us the best way they knew.

But it made me wonder: What if our legacy is creating a world where the next generation doesn’t have to hide who they are just to feel safe?

Our ancestors opened doors they couldn’t always walk through. It’s our responsibility to keep opening them for others.

So tonight, right here in my hometown of Detroit…

Ancestors, I got you! I understand why you told us not to show our colors.

But Tonight, I’m going to SHOW UP and SHOW OUT!

And hopefully, the next generation won’t have to think twice about doing the same.

Day 1 of the DNPs of Color™ Convention In Detroit!

I really appreciate conferences where we can learn, connect, and return home with something meaningful for our communities.

Dr. Kim Byas, Sr., PhD, MPH, FACHE, FACHDM
gave a great talk on Community-Driven Innovation for Health Equity. What stood out to me most was that innovation isn’t always about technology. Often, it begins by listening to our communities and turning those conversations into real action.

The networking was just as valuable! I finally met Dr. Danielle McCamey and Dr. Dwayne Alleyne DNP, APRN, ACNP-C , two leaders I’ve followed on LinkedIn and Instagram who are doing amazing work advocating for nurses across the country.

And surprise, surprise! 😂 I ran into fellow Wayne State DNP graduate Temeka HW Dr. Temeka Horton - Washington, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, GCNE!
Always great seeing fellow Warriors!

Speaking of community, here’s an opportunity to give back!

DNPs of Color has partnered with Congress of Communities, a nonprofit supporting youth, education, leadership, and community advocacy in Southwest Detroit.

The goal is $10,000, with 100% of donations going directly to Congress of Communities.

I love this because conferences should be about more than networking. We should leave a positive impact on the communities that welcome us.

From 2013 to 2026. Life really does come full circle.

In 2013, after my traumatic brain injury (TBI), I met Dr. LaMaurice Gardner, PhD, a psychologist and retired law enforcement officer who has spent decades helping first responders. Scheduling conflicts prevented him from taking me on as a client, but thankfully, I found Dr. Karen Clark, PhD, an amazing psychologist who changed my life.

One thing I never forgot was a picture in Dr. Gardner’s office called The Folly of Fear, which he explained represented PTSD.

“A man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears. To let a phantom conquer reality is the ultimate folly.”

Thirteen years later, I reached out asking about that picture. He immediately responded and invited me to reconnect, this time as peers!

We talked about our journeys, his decades of experience, and our shared passion for helping military personnel, first responders, and frontline workers.

I still remember how I felt in 2013.

“Nobody understands what I’m going through.”

“I can’t speak up because it might cost me my career.”

Unfortunately, so many people in high-demand professions still feel this way, suffering in silence.

Walking back into his office and seeing that picture brought me right back to 2013.

The difference? Back then, I was running from that ghost. Today, I know I can walk through it.

Grateful to reconnect with Dr. Gardner and looking forward to his mentorship. Hopefully, together with others who share this passion, we can continue being a lighthouse for those still finding their way.

Sometimes people return to your life for a different purpose.

Bringing Communities Together for Better Health!

On Tuesday, October 6, Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN), alongside our regional partners, hosted the 2026 Vaccine Champions Mini-Conference!

Healthcare, behavioral health, and public health professionals came together to share valuable insights, strengthen partnerships, and explore ways to improve vaccine awareness, access, and confidence across our communities.

The event also featured a vaccine clinic hosted by the Oakland County Health Division, providing an opportunity to put prevention into action.

Together, we are working toward healthier, stronger communities through education, collaboration, and prevention!

This really means a lot to me! 💙

I honestly thought I was being scammed 😅

I feel truly honored and grateful to be chosen as the recipient of the 2026 DNPs of Color™ DNPs of Color Emerging Leader Award!

When I transitioned from law enforcement into nursing, I never imagined all the doors this profession would open or the amazing people I would meet along the way.

One thing that has never changed is my passion for serving others, advocating for mental health, reducing stigma, and making sure those who are suffering in silence know they don’t have to do it alone.

I’m grateful to DNPs of Color for this honor and for building a community that values leadership, mentorship, diversity, and the difference we can make together.

Congrats to all the other honorees! I can’t wait to celebrate with everyone at the Allen-Mahoney Gala of the Future here in Detroit!

You have to show up.

I really enjoyed attending the Vaccine Champions Mini Conference 2026 today, hosted by Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN).

It was great seeing Dr. Allison Palmer and Dr. Reid again. I’ve worked with both through community outreach, and Dr. Palmer has been a tremendous resource to me over the years.

Huge shout-out to all the psychiatrists, NPs, PAs, nurses, and mental health clinicians who showed up. It was a reminder that we don’t just treat the brain, we care for the whole person. Mental and physical health are connected.

A few things that stuck with me:

• You have to show up.
• Think outside the box.
• Build stronger community partnerships and wraparound services.
• Prevention can reduce the strain on emergency services.
• We can’t always expect people to come to us. Sometimes we have to go to them.
• Keep showing up and building trust, especially with communities that have historically been hard to reach.
• Some of our most vulnerable neighbors may not be able to advocate for themselves.

Before transitioning into mental health, I worked as an ER nurse before and during COVID. That experience changed how I look at illnesses like influenza, pneumonia, and COVID. I saw firsthand how seriously they can affect people and families.

Ironically, I didn’t catch COVID until 2022, and yes, it kicked my butt. 😅

I don’t have all the answers. But I believe in listening, sharing reliable information, building trust, and helping people make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

Show up. Listen. Educate. Build trust. Meet people where they are.

And yes, I got my flu shot last week. 😂 I go to way too many meetings and conferences to be catching everybody else’s germs! 😅💉

Great job, OCHN and CNS Healthcare. This was community health, collaboration, and prevention in action.

Interventional Psychiatry Is Expanding at Lakes Center Mental Health Network.

What happens when treatment starts working, but you’re still figuring out how to move forward?

Reducing symptoms matters, but recovery is more than just feeling better. It’s about getting back to the people, activities, and values that make life meaningful.

At Lakes Interventional Therapies Center, we’re expanding access to innovative interventional psychiatry treatments and combining them with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support meaningful, individualized recovery.

Here’s a question I often ask:

“If treatment gives you some space from your symptoms, what do you want to do with that space?”

With Lynne Lyons, MD leading the way, we’re continuing to explore how innovation, psychotherapy, and personalized care can work together to help each person move toward their goals.

Psychotherapy matters. Medication matters. Technology matters. Most importantly, the person receiving treatment matters.
