Well that statistic is horrifying.

But this is a big part of why device access is a part of our plan. Devices are hard to get for urban middle class white families....they're harder to get for everyone else.

Physicians are being told to play a bigger role in ensuring that children with disabilities have access to needed augmentative and alternative communication technologies.

We're at the Rapid City Area Schools Behavior Refresh Conference today. One of our elders who mentors us, Dr. Linda Herzberg, is here keeping me company and talking with people with me. We've been talking everything from basics of what AAC is to specifics of our work.

This is a recordable button, meant for classroom games. You push a tiny button to record your voice, and then when you hit the big black surface, it plays that message back We've used these for years for things where a single message is likely needed, but a communication device might not be on hand - like asking for help in the bathroom.

There's a special ed version of this - an approved medical device that insurance might pay for. But they're about 30x more expensive than this button, and insurance won't pay for one if they're already paying for another communication device.

At my son's first AAC evaluation, now more than a dozen years ago, would not even approve one of these, because they weren't convinced he could learn how to use it.

Today, these same cheaper buttons (although still typically 2-3 times the cost of the button shown here) are used to teach pets - dogs, cats, parrots, and more - to talk. But no one other than their owner gets to decide whether or not they're capable of communicating.

Here are close-ups of our display board. We had brochures, business cards & devices for people to try. I think we probably need a video, with an intro and scenes of people using our vocab. What would you want to know more about if you walked up to our table?
