A few weeks ago, we asked you to share your Mt. Adams Institute stories with us. Now, we get to start sharing some of them. 💚

First up is David Escarcega, who spent his internship at Mark Twain National Forest.

David shared:
“I was fortunate to have spent time living in a wonderful community thanks to this endeavor. I’m sad this opportunity is concluding.”

Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more stories from the people who have been part of Mt. Adams Institute over the years. Different programs, different places, different chapters of life, but all connected through this community.

When we think about Sense of Place, we think about stories.

Stories that deepen our understanding of the Columbia River Gorge. Stories that introduced us to new perspectives and people. Stories that remind us that every landscape has a history and a shared sense of place has the power to connect us.

For many years, those conversations have been thoughtfully guided by Sarah Fox, whose passion for storytelling and community helped shape the series into something truly special. Her ability to bring people together through curiosity, conversation, and a shared appreciation for this region left a lasting impact on our community.

To Sarah, our speakers, volunteers, and everyone who joined us over the years, thank you. Together, you reminded us that a sense of place isn’t just about where we live. It’s about the stories, relationships, and shared experiences that help us feel connected to it.

Some of the most meaningful learning happens outside.
Over the years, we watched young people discover things they couldn’t learn from a textbook alone. They learned to ask questions, work together, solve problems, and see the natural world with a sense of curiosity and wonder.

Research shows that time spent outdoors can build confidence, strengthen problem-solving skills, and foster environmental awareness. We had the privilege of seeing those lessons come to life through our summer camps, outdoor school, after-school programs, and other education initiatives.

While every child had a different experience, our hope was always the same: that they would leave with a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and the confidence to keep exploring it.

Those moments of discovery are some of the memories we’ll always cherish.

Behind every successful intern is someone who took the time to teach, encourage, and believe in them.

Over the years, we’ve watched incredible professionals open doors for our participants by sharing not only their knowledge, but also their patience, encouragement, and passion for the work they do.

Some lessons came while restoring trails. Others happened during conversations on the drive back from a project or over lunch after a long day in the field. Those moments often became just as meaningful as the work itself.

To every mentor who welcomed our participants, answered countless questions, offered guidance, and led by example, thank you. Your influence reaches far beyond a single season. It lives on in the careers, confidence, and commitment of the people you helped shape.

We are deeply grateful for the role you played in our story.

It’s easy to enjoy a hike, a campground, or a scenic overlook without thinking about everything that happens behind the scenes.

Trails need maintenance. Habitats need restoration. Visitors need education. Public lands require year-round care from dedicated professionals who work to keep these places healthy, safe, and accessible.

For many of our participants, that work became more than an internship. Through VetsWork and Land Stewards, they gained hands-on experience while contributing to projects that protect the forests, rivers, wildlife, and public lands we all value.

The next time you explore your favorite trail or visit a national forest, take a moment to appreciate the people whose work often goes unseen.

A conservation career isn’t just one job. It’s hundreds of different paths, all connected by a shared purpose: caring for the places we love.

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching participants discover careers they never knew existed. Some found their calling restoring trails or improving wildlife habitat. Others found purpose in environmental education, recreation management, forestry, fisheries, or public land stewardship.

Through our VetsWork and Land Stewards programs, participants gained more than experience. They gained confidence, mentorship, and a clearer vision for what was possible.

One of the things we’re most proud of is seeing so many alumni continue working in conservation, carrying forward the same passion and commitment they brought to Mt. Adams Institute.

The future of our public lands depends on people who care for them, and we’re grateful to have been a small part of that journey.

Some of our happiest memories are filled with muddy boots, curious questions, and the excitement of discovering something new.

Over the years, our education programs took many forms. Summer camps, outdoor school, after-school programs, in-school learning, and even virtual camps when the world looked a little different. No matter the format, the goal was always the same: to help young people build a meaningful connection with the natural world.

Watching a child discover a salamander, identify a tree for the first time, or proudly share what they had learned was a reminder of why this work mattered.

To every camper, student, educator, volunteer, and family who was part of these programs, thank you for making every season unforgettable. We hope the curiosity you found outdoors has stayed with you long after camp came to an end.

No two days as a Land Steward looked exactly the same, and that was part of what made the experience so meaningful.

Some days meant long hours in the field. Others brought new projects, new places, and new challenges. Every day was a chance to learn from experienced professionals, care for public lands, and grow in ways that couldn’t be taught in a classroom.

These photos capture Raina during her time as a Public Lands Steward with Mt. Adams Institute. Like so many of our interns over the years, she brought curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to jump in wherever she was needed.

Looking back, it’s the people like Raina who made these programs so special. Their passion, hard work, and commitment left a lasting impact on the landscapes they cared for and on everyone who had the chance to work alongside them.

To every intern who has been part of Mt. Adams Institute,
Thank you.

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching people arrive from all different backgrounds and walks of life. Some of you came with a clear sense of where you were headed. Others were still figuring it out. No matter where you started, each of you left your mark on this place.

You brought fresh ideas, new perspectives, hard work, kindness, and a genuine desire to make a difference. You celebrated the wins with us, worked through the challenges, and reminded us that this work has always been about people.

It’s easy to think of an internship as something you receive. But the truth is, we received so much from you, too.
You helped shape our programs, strengthened our community, and became part of the story we’ll carry with us long after our final chapter.

As we reflect on the past 15 years, we’ve found ourselves coming back to the same thought again and again.

It isn’t the programs we’ll remember most.
It isn’t the milestones.
It isn’t even the places.

It’s the people.

The conversations that turned into friendships. The mentors who shared their time and wisdom. The participants who inspired us with their passion and determination. The partners who believed in what we were building.

Thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey. We hope Mt. Adams Institute gave you something you’ll carry with you for years to come, just as we’ll carry these memories with us.
