Having bear problems? You are not alone.

Bears are busy this time of year putting on weight in preparation for winter. If you need to protect a small area, such as bee hives, feed storage sheds, or poultry houses, then you should consider electric fencing as an effective deterrent.

It wouldn’t be a Mount Rogers Spring Naturalist Rally sponsored without the spring azure (Celastrina ladon)! They emerge early after overwintering as pupae. This tiny butterfly is part of a subfamily called the ‘Blues' that includes the summer azure (Celastrina neglecta) and the eastern tailed blue (Cupido comyntas). Spring and summer azures are almost impossible to tell apart just by looking at them, so your best bet is to base identification on the time of year. Both species have pale underwings with black spots, and blue upperwings. Females have some black outlining on their upper wings as well. When azures rest, they do so with their wings closed. Coupled with their crazy flying, it’s a challenge to get a picture of their beautiful wings!
