After more than 30 years of service with the Trotwood Fire Department, Lt. Kris Long was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer—just four months away from his planned retirement.

Kris has spent decades serving and protecting the Trotwood community. He’s also an Army veteran, husband, father, brother, friend, and someone who has always been there for the people around him.

Now, Kris and his family are facing a long and difficult road ahead, including surgery, medical appointments, scans, and ongoing cancer treatment.

If you’re able to help, please consider making a donation. If you can’t donate, sharing this post and keeping Kris and his family in your prayers means just as much.

🎉 CONGRATULATIONS, MARK JOHNSON ON YOUR RETIREMENT! 🎉

The man, The myth, The legend.

Mark Johnson has dedicated 26 years of service to the city of Trotwood and over 30 as a first responder!

Yesterday crews and family gathered to celebrate marks last official day with the city of Trotwood. We will miss him dearly at the firehouse. However we are so excited to see him get to celebrate his retirement and enjoy the time now with his family at home.

Off duty members drove mark home in the engine this morning to give him one last ride,

Thank you for everything Mark.
Enjoy retirement, you deserve it!

Fairfield Township Administration has announced a reduction in the minimum daily fire department staffing from 11 to 9 firefighters to reduce overtime costs.

What does this mean for our community?

Under this proposed staffing reduction, Station 211 on Morris Road will operate with only three firefighters, significantly limiting operational capabilities and reducing the resources available to protect residents when they need help most.

In May, Fairfield Township residents approved a fire levy with the understanding that it would help maintain the level of service the community has come to expect and meet the growing demands placed on the fire department. Despite that public support and investment, minimum daily staffing has now been reduced.

If voters approved funding for fire services, why is staffing now being reduced?

This decision increases strain on remaining firefighters and diminishes the department’s ability to deliver the level of emergency response our residents expect and deserve.

We strongly urge township leadership to restore staffing levels and prioritize the safety of both the community and the firefighters who serve it.

We encourage residents to stay informed and hold those accountable for decisions that directly affect emergency services in Fairfield Township.

Our community deserves transparency, and right now, there are serious concerns that need to be addressed.

Following a decision by city leadership, the Englewood Fire Department has lost key positions who are critical to maintaining safe and effective emergency operations; leaving our department without the command structure necessary to operate at the level our citizens expect and deserve.

Every day, your firefighters respond to emergencies that require clear leadership, coordination, and accountability. Without a proper chain of command in place, the lives of our citizens and safety of our firefighters are at risk.

We have made multiple attempts to raise these concerns directly with city leadership, but so far, those efforts have not resulted in meaningful dialogue.

We are asking for one simple thing: to be heard.

Your firefighters are committed to protecting this community, but we cannot ignore conditions that may impact our ability to do so safely and effectively. We believe the public has a right to know what is happening and how it may affect emergency response in Englewood.

We urge city leadership to engage in an open and honest conversation to address these concerns before a preventable issue becomes a tragedy.

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨

Starting on 4/8/26 for a minimum of 90 days, our minimum staffing will be LOWERED from 8 staff members on duty to 6 staff members on duty. This means when below 8 firefighters on duty Ladder 73 will be placed OUT OF SERVICE. Our new minimum staffing will be as follows:

Station 72:
TF4: 1 Captain
Engine 72: 1 Lieutenant, 1 Firefighter
Medic 72: 2 Firefighter/Paramedics (or 1 PM/ 1 EMT)

Station 73
Ladder 73: OUT OF SERVICE
Medic 73: 2 Firefighter/Paramedics (or 1 PM/1 EMT)

Admin Building (6 staff members)
1 Fire Chief (FF/PM
1 Deputy Fire Chief (FF/PM)
1 Fire Marshal (FF/PM)
1 Fire Safety Educator (FF/PM)
1 Community Paramedic (FF/PM
1 Accreditation Manager (Non Fire or EMS certified)

To answer your first question, yes there will be the same amount of front line staff members as there is admin staff members on duty.

Local 4024 strongly opposes lower staffing in our city, and will continue to fight for the safety of our citizens. This is a DANGEROUS change made by our fire administration. Crews work 48 hour shifts, and our call volume is expected to be over 8500 this year. We need MORE staff members, not less.

Please feel free to call the Fire Chief with any of your questions, and or concerns about our staffing.
