June 6, 1944 — D-Day
Eighty-two years ago today, Allied forces launched the largest amphibious invasion in military history. Under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, more than 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops crossed the English Channel and assaulted the beaches of Normandy, France.
The operation was supported by over 23,000 airborne troops, approximately 6,900 vessels, and more than 13,000 aircraft. By day’s end, the Allies had secured a foothold in Nazi-occupied Europe, beginning the long campaign that would ultimately lead to the liberation of Western Europe and the end of World War II in Europe.
The cost of freedom was immense. On D-Day alone, Allied forces suffered approximately 10,000 casualties, including more than 4,400 who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Before the invasion, General Eisenhower issued a message to the troops:
“The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.”
Today, we remember the courage of those who stormed the beaches, parachuted into enemy territory, crewed the ships and aircraft, and fought against overwhelming odds. We honor not only their victory, but their sacrifice, determination, and unwavering commitment to freedom.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4133 proudly remembers the heroes of D-Day. Their courage changed the course of history. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
