Here are some power strip and surge protector safety tips.
Power strips should be replaced every 3 to 5 years, as the internal surge protection components degrade with each surge they absorb. Replace them sooner if you experience frequent power outages, or immediately if you notice any physical damage like a frayed cord, burn marks, or overheating.
When to replace immediately
Physical damage: If the cord is frayed, cracked, or has burn marks, replace it immediately to prevent shock or fire hazards.
Malfunctions: If the switch isn't working, sockets are loose, or you hear sparking, the strip needs to be replaced.
Overheating: A power strip that feels hot to the touch, even when not overloaded, is a fire risk and should be replaced at once.
Persistent power issues: If a circuit powered by the strip experiences random power outages, the strip itself may be failing.
When to replace preventatively
Three to five years: As a general rule, replace surge protectors every 3 to 5 years to ensure continued protection, as their internal components wear out over time.
Two years: If you live in an area with frequent power surges, brownouts, or blackouts, consider replacing the surge protector every 2 years.
After a major surge: Replace surge protectors immediately after a significant electrical event in your area, such as a lightning strike or a power surge, as it may have compromised the unit's protection.
How to tell if a surge protector is still working
Indicator light: Many surge protectors have a light to indicate that surge protection is active. If this light goes out, the protection has been used up, and the unit should be replaced, even if it still supplies power.
No indicator light: Without a light, it's impossible to know when protection has worn off, which is why a time-based replacement schedule is so important.
