Rest is a core part of what we teach at and our students took that lesson beyond the classroom. In partnership with Rutgers University, Justice & Joy, and the State of NJ DCF Division on Women, Timbuk2 Academy was selected as the sole organization in central NJ to lead a community action project centered on rest and self-care for Black girls.

While spending a day at Rutgers, this is the commercial they created to share their message with their community. This is what our curriculum looks like every day, not a one-time topic, but a value our students carry with them and pass on.

At Timbuk2 Academy, girlhood is honored across every stage of development, from our early childhood learners to our young adult women. For many Black and brown girls, girlhood is often rushed, overlooked, or taken away too soon. Through our curriculum, we make sure our girls have the space to experience it fully. A holistic education considers both the inner life and the external world our girls navigate every day.

This Memorial Day, Timbuk2 Academy pauses to honor all who have served and sacrificed in defense of this nation. Their courage and commitment deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. 🕯️

We also pause to honor the full truth of history. The first Decoration Day was not declared by a general or a government. It was organized by Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865, on the grounds of a former Confederate prison, as an act of dignity, remembrance, and moral clarity.

At Timbuk2 Academy, we are committed to an education that does not omit, that does not simplify, and that prepares our students to engage the world with both knowledge and integrity.
