Water Our Girls Wednesday Timbuk2 Academy

Timbuk2 Academy students travel. From the East Coast to the West Coast and abroad, our girls represent this institution and carry their education well beyond Trenton, New Jersey. Travel is a core part of the learning experience.

Every Wednesday we invite our community to invest directly in the education and advancement of our students. Today we are building our student travel fund. Your contribution at any level expands where our girls go and what they are able to access.

Decades apart, connected by the same educational legacy. A mother who once attended the founding Timbuktu Academy now watches her daughter experience that same foundation through Timbuk2 Academy.

Since 1982, our history has been written through the generations of families who have entrusted us with their children. Seeing that legacy continue from mother to daughter is a reflection of the enduring place this institution holds in our community.

Two generations. One legacy.

Timbuk2 Academy Timbuk2 Academy students began their collaborative textile project at Grounds For Sculpture Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, working within the space where renowned artist Shantell Martin MBE Shantell Martin’s exhibition, Past, Present, Future, lives. For this project, the gallery itself becomes our classroom.

Our girls explored Martin’s work, encountered her sculpture BENN, and began sketching their own designs alongside teaching artist Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild Princeton Sankofa Stitchers. Their finished textile pieces will become part of the exhibition on view through July 2028.

There is a certain freedom that comes with knowing you have nothing to prove.

A girl who knows her worth does not have to compete for it, perform for it, or explain herself into deserving it. She can walk into a room with something much quieter and far more powerful: the understanding that who she is was never up for negotiation.

Timbuk2 Academy students are growing within an educational legacy that has believed in the inherent worth of Black children for more than four decades and that understanding continues with this generation.

There are things a parent notices when her daughter is being educated with her whole life in mind. Ms. Mia shared this reflection on her daughter’s experience at Timbuk2 Academy, and her words speak to something that has been part of this institution for generations.

There is a particular kind of education that happens here. Our families experience it and our girls carry it with them.
