Many people mistakenly believe Dolly Parton's song '9 to 5' anthem was titled after the standard workday, but the song and film were actually inspired by the 9to5 social movement which emerged in Boston in the early 1970s.

The 9to5 organization was led by women workers who advocated for pay equality and rights in the workplace. It is one of the foundational protest movements of modern feminism and one of the most significant organic worker uprisings in American history.

When people retell Dolly's legacy, be sure to include her undying solidarity with working people who take a stand in the struggle for equality.

New York teachers just won a significant victory. As part of the state budget, lawmakers passed a $557 million pension reform that lowers the retirement age from 63 to 58 for teachers with 30 years in the classroom. It's a direct response to Tier 6 — the pension structure created over a decade ago that pushed retirement age to 62 for public workers hired after April 2012, a move widely seen as punitive to educators entering the profession.

Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, called it "a major step in correcting the injustice of Tier 6." The union fought hard for this, and it matters. Teaching is demanding work — physically, emotionally, intellectually. Allowing experienced educators to step away five years earlier acknowledges that reality and honors the decades of labor they've given.

This isn't the end of the conversation. The union continues to push for a retirement age of 55. But this win shows what sustained advocacy can accomplish when teachers organize and refuse to accept systems designed to undervalue their work.
