For over 15 years we have been celebrating The International Day of the Family with an art and essay contest. This year we partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Mercer County and were pleased to select eight excellent entries describing the meaning of family. Congratulations to the children and their families - a winning combination!

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM
DAY 16: Reflection - On Day 16, we reflect on what we learned during the 16 Days.
Today, December 10, is also Human Rights Day, which commemorates the day in 1948 when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Eleanor Roosevelt was the first chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights and played a significant role in drafting the UDHR along with other women who were crucial to the document’s adoption.
Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights, and every woman is able to achieve her full potential.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM
DAY 15: Service
There are many ways Zonta clubs — and YOU — can assist survivors of domestic violence, for example by making a donation to a local women's shelter or to an organization that responds to domestic violence. Once again this year Zonta Trenton Mercer collected pajamas and soft socks and assembled “comfort kits” to give to the women served by Younity (formerly Womanspace, Inc). Service is what Zonta Trenton Mercer does!

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM
DAY 14: Community
Some ways that Zonta clubs focus their community’s attention on the issue of gender-based violence might be through hosting a book club, speaking with local police or officials, or organizing a Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women march. For Day 14, Zonta Trenton Mercer hopes to engage our own community in our campaign. At a recent meeting, our members and community partners staged what will be our Zonta Says NO virtual march. Today we share it with you.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM
DAY 13: Outreach
Day 13 is the day for outreach. Some Zonta clubs do this by organizing a letter writing or postcard campaign to elected officials on an issue of importance, or a letter to the editor on a gender-based violence issue in your community or state. What issue, especially one that concerns gender violence, is on your mind? Consider focusing attention on it through a letter to the editor of a local paper, or a letter or email to your legislator.

At our "Souper" Holiday Dinner meeting this past week, Zonta Trenton Mercer members and guests enjoyed homemade soups, breads, and other goodies. For our service projects, we also collected holiday gifts for Princeton Nursery School's Operation Elf program; purchased gift cards for teens at the Center for Family Services; food, clothing and toys for the Zonta Closet at the Children's Home Society daycare center; and we put holiday bows on books purchased for preschoolers at Better Beginnings Child Development Center in Hightstown. Many thanks to Sharon Kyle and Kyle Family Farm for hosting us!

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM
DAY 12: Student Engagement - Zonta International believes young people are critical to achieving gender equality and ending violence against women and girls around the world.
Through the Z and Golden Z Club program, Zonta members work to bring ours mission to students and to stimulate new and meaningful student-led service and advocacy projects. Z clubs are formed in high schools, and Golden Z clubs are formed on college campuses. The clubs are designed to provide opportunities for young adults to develop communication and leadership skills, explore career alternatives, and increase their international awareness and understanding through service. Are you interested in forming or joining a Z Club? Message us for information.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM
DAY 11: Tribute - Highlight stories of survivors via social media.
According to the website herstory.global, “labeling your experience following sexual assault has been linked with better recovery, but the majority (60%) of women are unable to make sense of their experience leading to self-blame and poor adjustment.” Storytelling provides a platform where victims can speak openly about what they went through and provides a space to receive support and grow understanding.
