🧬 What happens when the DNA doesn't match the story?

Join us July 15 for a fascinating webinar with Theresa Martin McEwen as she unravels a family mystery decades in the making.

George Derone Martin was born in 1879 or 1880 in Omaha — orphaned in childhood, origins unknown. But genetic genealogy had a surprise in store: his roots didn't lead west. They led to Virginia, to intermarried colonial families, and to a biological parent who was also adopted.

Theresa will walk us through how she used DNA clustering analysis, pattern recognition, and some serious detective work to piece together George's most likely parents and grandparents — and what that journey looked like step by step.

Whether you're a seasoned genetic genealogist or just starting to explore DNA research, this one will give you new tools for your own brick walls.

Ever wonder where a century of research lives? 🏛️📦

Since 1960, the Genealogical Society of New Jersey has deposited its extensive manuscript collections at Rutgers University’s Special Collections and University Archives. This isn't just a list of names—it’s a massive archive of family papers, unique research notes, and rare New Jersey documents.

While many of our indexes are available online, these physical files are where the "deep dives" happen. It’s the place where you might find a handwritten letter from a 4x great-grandfather or a map of a long-lost family farm.

Lost an ancestor between 1880 and 1900? 🔍 You aren't alone! The 1890 Federal Census was almost entirely destroyed by fire, leaving a massive 20-year gap for researchers.

But here is the "New Jersey Advantage": The Garden State conducted its own state censuses in 1855, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, and 1915! 📉✨

These records are an incredible resource for tracking family movement, identifying new children, and finding relatives who didn't stay in one place for long. GSNJ provides the guides and updates you need to navigate these unique state records.
