NJ Hellenic American Heritage Commission On October 25, 2019, Governor Philip D. Murphy appointed the following individuals to serve on the NJ Hellenic American Heritage Commission. Horiates, Esq.

The Commission is authorized to study, recognize and share information on Hellenic heritage, culture & history as it relates to Americans of Hellenic ancestry and their contributions to the State of New Jersey. The NJ Hellenic American Heritage Commission is proud to announce its 2021 inaugural Essay Writing Scholarship.

Developed with the NJ Department of State, this essay contest is open to all NJ High School students and brings with it $4, 000 in scholarship

The winning two essays will receive the $2,000 Gus Leontarakis Hellenism Award and the $2, 000 Irene Leontarakis Agape Award.

The Awards will be presented and the NJ Greek Independence Day reception on March 19, 2022.

Celebrated by millions of Greeks and Cypriots around the world , this marks the 80th anniversary of OXI Day. On October 28, 1940, Greek leader Ioannis Metaxas said OXI, or NO, to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his demand to take up strategic positions inside Greek sovereign territory. By proudly resisting occupation by Italy and the Axis Powers, Greece entered into World War II on the side of the Allies, ultimately affecting the trajectory of the war.

What Metaxas did by saying no to the fascist powers bent on subjugating Europe at that dark point in history was also to say yes to freedom and democracy.

Celebrating Greek Independence Day Today!!

"200 years ago today Greece declared its independence after being under Ottoman Turkish dominion for 400 years. The heroes of 1821 saw this proclamation through to victory. I’m proud to celebrate Greece today which has given so much to Western Civilization.
