In the United States, living with a disability—or caring for someone who is—often means navigating a system that penalizes economic mobility and financial stability.

For millions of Americans, the "hidden cost" of disability is embedded in systemic structural barriers that force families and adults into impossible financial choices such as:

The Marriage Penalty: Adults who rely on Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid for essential health care face benefit cuts or complete loss of coverage if they choose to marry.

The Income Cap Tightrope: For families raising medically complex children, even a modest 1% cost-of-living raise at work can push household income over strict state thresholds, threatening critical Medicaid waivers that pay for specialized nursing and life-support equipment.

Ford Foundation U.S. Disability Rights program grantees are working to advance economic justice for the more than 40 million Americans living with a disability.

A new Medicare rule could limit access to essential urological supplies for people with Spina Bifida and other conditions. But your voice can make a difference. It only takes a few minutes to contact your Member of Congress. Visit https://vist.ly/5cqjk and send your message today.

🚨 Congress needs to hear from their constituents.

The Spina Bifida community relies on access to the right urologic and ostomy supplies to protect our health, independence, and daily lives.

The proposed CMS competitive bidding program could limit your options, including access to the catheter or supplies that work best for your body, your abilities, and your individual needs. Delays in receiving the right supplies—or being forced to switch to products that don’t work for you—can have serious consequences.

The wrong supplies can contribute to:
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
• Kidney damage
• Skin complications
• Leaks and discomfort
• Pain and loss of independence
• Hospital stays

Members of Congress need to hear directly from the people impacted and their families.

Share your story by August 7. Comment below or send us a DM to tell us how access to the right supplies affects your health and quality of life.

Complicated paperwork shouldn't be the reason people lose their Medicaid coverage. A new federal rule requires many adults who get Medicaid to prove they're working, studying, or volunteering 80 hours a month. People with disabilities are supposed to be exempt, but the rule adds so much paperwork that many could lose coverage anyway—not because they're ineligible, but because they can't keep up with the red tape.

Tell the government to fix this. Submit a comment here by the July 31 deadline: https://bit.ly/4wmhKIk

Wheelchair breakdowns can be traumatizing & dangerous—often limiting wheelchair users' mobility & access to work, school, appointments & more.

My FAST Repairs for Wheelchairs Act is essential to livability & would streamline repair services by removing unnecessary paperwork.
