Newark Water Coalition, a Lead-Free NJ Community Hub Emeritus, was covered by NJ Spotlight News:

The New Jersey Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Authority (NJMIHIA) convened doulas, birth workers, community leaders, and maternal health advocates from across the state last month for "The Village Moves Forward", a statewide Doula Town Hall focused on strengthening collaboration, advancing birth equity, and supporting healthier outcomes for New Jersey families. LFNJ tabled at the event and gave out certified Brita USA water filters to Doulas.

It is important for homes built before 1986 to have paint and water tested for lead. Children must be tested by their pediatrician for lead exposure at ages 1 and 2, and then annually if exposure is suspected.

Formula-fed infants are most at risk for lead in drinking water exposure. Make sure to run tap water for 30 seconds to clear the pipes and use cold water for baby formula, drinking, and cooking. BOILING WATER DOES NOT ELIMINATE LEAD. In addition, certified NSF/ANSI-point-of-use water filters offer a proven, accessible way to remove lead right where water is used for drinking and cooking.

Babies and toddlers, frequently at floor level, are vulnerable to lead poisoning if they ingest lead paint chips or regularly inhale lead dust. Even at minimal levels of exposure, lead can cause decreased intelligence, attention and learning difficulties, speech and hearing problems, slowed growth, nervous system disorders, and behavioral problems. Make sure to clean windowsills, floors, and carpets regularly to prevent buildup of dust or paint chips.

Our Small Home Repair Program is back!
Homeowners in the East Trenton Neighborhood are eligible to apply for up to $7,000 in grant funds to be used for health/safety related repairs to their homes. The application period will run from 8/14-9/25, and applications will be available in person at the East Trenton Center and on our website.



Note: Applications will NOT be available until 8/14, and grantees will be awarded based on the severity of the health/safety issues in the home.
