Jim Ooley Scholarship Fund

The official page for information about the annual golf outing that is held each year in memory of Traverse City High football coach Jim Ooley. Coach Ooley originally wanted to host an event where his former and current players could gather and socialize, and the annual golf outing began. A scholarship was established in the early 80's to put the proceeds of the outing to use. After Coach

died, a group of former players continued the tradition in his honor. Bob Merchant, Mike Carter and Jim Goss are the driving forces of the annual event, but they count on volunteers and community support to make the golf outing a success each year. Numerous merchants contribute by sponsoring holes along the course and donating prizes for a silent auction. Members of this page are welcome to suggest merchants or other potential donors. The goal of the golf outing is to raise enough money each year to provide scholarships for high school students from several area schools to attend college. The recipients are selected through a process that includes input from the high school principals and are not limited to athletes. Financial need is one of the considerations. It's a way for members of the community to keep Jim Ooley's memory alive - everyone working together to make things better.
