Jim Ooley Scholarship Fund News & updates on the annual golf outing held to fund the scholarship set up to honor the memory of legendary Traverse City High football coach Jim Ooley.

The official page for information about the annual golf outing that is held each year in memory of Traverse City High football coach Jim Ooley. Coach Ooley originally wanted to host an event where his former and current players could gather and socialize, and the annual golf outing began. A scholarship was established in the early 80's to put the proceeds of the outing to use. After Coach died, a group of former players continued the tradition in his honor. Bob Merchant, Mike Carter and Jim Goss are the driving forces of the annual event, but they count on volunteers and community support to make the golf outing a success each year. Numerous merchants contribute by sponsoring holes along the course and donating prizes for a silent auction. Members of this page are welcome to suggest merchants or other potential donors. The goal of the golf outing is to raise enough money each year to provide scholarships for high school students from several area schools to attend college. The recipients are selected through a process that includes input from the high school principals and are not limited to athletes. Financial need is one of the considerations. It's a way for members of the community to keep Jim Ooley's memory alive - everyone working together to make things better.

The 2026 Jim Ooley Scholarship Recipients

Isabella Pedroza - St. Francis ($2,000)
Isabelle plans to attend University of Notre Dame, where she will pursue studies in the sciences. She graduated with a 3.82 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. At St. Francis, Isabelle was a varsity tennis player and a member of the varsity cheerleading team during her junior and senior years. She received the Paula Badosa Tennis Award in 2025 and was a regional semifinalist during her junior year. Isabelle also has an extensive record of volunteer service throughout high school.

Owen Wohlfert - TC West ($2,000)
Owen plans to attend the University of Norte Dame, where he will major in Biomedical Engineering. He graduated with a 3.99 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Owen participated in varsity football and varsity lacrosse for three years and served as captain of the football team during his senior year. He is a big Brother Big Sister mentor and has volunteered with the Traverse City Senior Center.

Kylie Ball - TC Central ($2,000)
Kylie plans to attend Grand Valley State University to major in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. She graduated with a 3.69 GPA and was a multi-sport varsity athlete, participating in basketball, soccer, and track. Kylie earned second-team all-conference and all-district honors in soccer, honorable mention all-conference basketball, and achieved second place in the region while helping her track team win conference championship. She is active in the National Honor Society, Big Brother Big Sister, and serves as captain of the Student Athlete Leadership Organization.
