Connecting With Our Communities Across Northeast Michigan

The Recovery Care Services team has had a busy summer getting out into our communities, building relationships, and spreading awareness about the services and resources available to those we serve!

Over the past several weeks, our team has participated in **Project Connect events in Alpena and Montmorency Counties**, which welcomed more than 400 individuals combined. We also joined the **Alpena Farmers Market for “Save a Life Saturday,”** connecting with community members, sharing resources, and collaborating with other local organizations.

Our team also attended the **Back-to-School event at the Boys & Girls Club of Alpena**, where we had the opportunity to meet local families, share more about Recovery Care Services, and give away some back-to-school items.

Chelsea and Amy also attended the SERGE presentation at the college, learning more about the program, opportunities that may benefit some of our clients, and ways we can strengthen collaboration within the jail system.

We are grateful for every opportunity to get out into the community, strengthen partnerships, and connect directly with the people we serve. Each conversation and collaboration helps us continue building stronger connections and finding new ways to support individuals throughout Northeast Michigan.

Today on International Overdose Awareness Day, we stand together across the globe declaring it's time for change. We are showing up, speaking up, and saying loudly - let's end overdose! 💜

2026 Nautical City Festival Queen and Court: More Than a Crown

The 2026 Nautical City Festival Queen and Court represent much more than a tradition. While they proudly serve as ambassadors for the Nautical City Festival, some of the court are also active members of Students Leading Students (SLS), a youth leadership organization dedicated to empowering young people to make positive choices and become leaders in their schools and communities. They inspire others by leading by example and showing that every young person has the power to create positive change and learn how to positively influence their peers and address important issues facing today's youth.

Working alongside Connie, their SLS Advisor, members receive guidance, mentorship, and opportunities to grow as leaders. Their advisor helps them plan community service projects, educational activities, and outreach efforts that support healthy decision-making among young people. Together, they foster an environment where students encourage one another to make responsible choices and build a stronger community.

Prevention efforts are a key part of the SLS mission. The Queen and Court actively support initiatives that promote healthy living, positive mental health, substance-use prevention, and overall wellness. By participating in awareness campaigns, community presentations, and youth-focused events, these student leaders help educate their peers about the importance of making choices that contribute to a healthy and successful future.

Together, they are not just a Queen and Court. They are students leading students toward a healthier, stronger, and brighter future.

Prevention Ramps Up for Back-to-School Event

With the rising cost of school supplies, events like Project Connect can help families with school aged children prepare for a successful start to the school year. This year's event took place at Spruce Presbyterian Church on the north side of the county and was hosted by members of the congregation.

The free event included back to school supplies, haircuts, food backpacks, games, inflatables, and giveaways from nine community agencies. In addition to school supplies and fun items for children, Alcona's Students Leading Students (SLS) Advisor provided parents with harm reduction resources, including lock bags, naloxone, ni****ne and cannabis test kits, and educational materials.

Up North Prevention Partners with Michigan State Police at the Northwestern Michigan Fair

The annual Northwestern Michigan Fair was held at the Grand Traverse County Fairgrounds from August 9–15, 2026. During the week-long event, Up North Prevention shared a vendor space with the Michigan State Police, collaborating on a prevention resource table that provided information and educational materials on substance misuse prevention, the dangers of va**ng, the Angel Program, and safe medication disposal.

The Michigan State Police also featured their Hidden in Plain Sight Trailer, an interactive exhibit designed to help parents, grandparents, and other caregivers recognize signs of potential substance use among youth. Visitors had the opportunity to walk through a mock teenage bedroom containing examples of va**ng devices, drug paraphernalia, and other items that may indicate substance use. Michigan State Police troopers were available throughout the event to guide attendees through the exhibit, answer questions, and provide valuable education on identifying warning signs and starting conversations with young people about substance use.

Events like the Northwestern Michigan Fair provide an important opportunity for community organizations to connect with families, share prevention resources, and promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles. Up North Prevention appreciates its continued partnership with the Michigan State Police in helping educate and support communities across Northern Michigan.
