Phase I was completed October 2022 through January 2023 when over 30 task force members engaged in discussion and productive inquiry around well-being and physical safety. P

hase II involved community engagement and the exploration of risk factor root causes and potential solutions. The next phase involves input from a Youth Advisory Council and the creation of our final report to the TCAPS board and the Grand Traverse Community.

Dear SKSS Supporters,

The Safer Kids, Safer Schools (SKSS) final report has been completed and is attached. Thank you for your participation in the SKSS Public Input Sessions. Together, we learned much about preventing school shootings and understand the urgent and important work that lies ahead in our schools and in our community.

We will present our report and findings to the TCAPS School Board at their 6 p.m. meeting on Monday, November 13, 2023 at the Boardman Building. Please plan to attend!

We encourage you to share this report with your friends, neighbors and co-workers. It is our civic responsibility to help identify young people in crisis and care for their well-being. Keeping our kids safer at school and in our community requires a new form of community literacy and action. Together we must support this work with compassion, time, energy and resources. The challenges are too great and the stakes are too high to ignore.

Sincerely,

Jay Berger, SKSS Co-founder and Co-chair

Unfortunately, the Safer Kids, Safer Schools (SKSS) final report scheduled to be shared at the 10/09/2023 TCAPS Board Meeting has been delayed. The consultant who is drafting the report, Pennie Foster-Fishman, has been consumed with caring for her aging parents. We support Pennie and her family members as they rally to care for their parents in a very difficult stage of life.

We anticipate sharing the final report at the 11/13/2023 TCAPS Board Meeting.

Moms Demand Action Traverse City to Host Screening of “After Parkland” Documentary with Panel Discussion to Follow

TRAVERSE CITY, MICH --- Moms Demand Action Traverse City in partnership with the State Theater will host a screening of the 2019 documentary, “After Parkland,” a film chronicling the fallout of the 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead. This film showcases the after effects on the small town of Parkland, Fla., rocked by this mass shooting, focusing on the families who lost their loved ones to gun violence. The organization is bringing this documentary to the big screen at the State Theater to raise awareness around the reality that gun violence is pervasive -- in cities big and small.

“It’s easy to feel insulated in a town like Traverse City, to not expect that gun violence will affect us on a scale like what Parkland experienced,” says Molly Stanifer, Moms Demand Action Volunteer, Traverse City. “But that conversation is changing, even in our small community.”

To prepare for these unthinkable certainties, the volunteer group is encouraging not only attending this screening but becoming familiar with how common sense gun reform helps to prevent gun deaths.

“Gun violence is the leading cause of death for kids, teens, and young adults ages 18-25 in the United States,” begins Stanifer. “Moms Demand Action is tapping into our network of supporters to help spread awareness and build a stronger movement for common sense gun reform.” To that end, post-screening, community experts and student leaders will facilitate a panel discussion and audience Q&A on responsible gun ownership and actions that can be taken to support Moms Demand Action’s work to increase public safety measures.

“If after this screening and talk we have just one person who stores their gun safely, reaches out to their Congressperson about gun safety laws, or even decides to join us in our movement, then we have made the impact we’re striving for,” asserts Stanifer.

The State Theater will screen “After Parkland” on Wednesday, October 18, at 6:30pm. Tickets are available for $10 each at stateandbijou.org or at the door, based on availability. Student tickets are free.

The screening and discussion is made possible by sponsors Cherry Bend Family Care, The Fierberg National Law Group, High Street Insurance Partners, Beth Holmes-Bozung, and Kevin Bozung.

Moms Demand Action, under the Everytown for Gun Safety umbrella, is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. We work to pass stronger gun laws and to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. Additionally, Moms Demand Action advocates in our local communities to encourage a culture of responsible gun ownership.

The State Theatre is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) that is dedicated to presenting a carefully-curated selection of movies that capture the human experience in transformative ways.

Online tickets need to be scanned before entering the theater. When you arrive, check in with theater staff before proceeding. Thank you for your assistance! Buy eGIFT Certificates! PLAYING
