Excerpt from "Beyond Books," about activities of Friends of TADL at the aging, overcrowded Sixth Street Library:

"Soon there was not just a Friends group, but even a Junior Friends group for children, which Rhonda Estes formed in 1988. The Junior Friends formed to help brighten the dreary atmosphere in the aging library and was active for about three years. The Junior Friends wore bright yellow shirts with a picture of bumblebees busily dusting bookshelves.

" 'I remember how dusty and drab looking the children's department was,' said Estes, a new local resident at the time. 'We met on Saturday mornings, I led art projects, and the children...donated their time to dust, wash shelves, alphabetize and clean books.' They hung the children's artwork on the walls and ceiling to make the area look more cheerful."

From almost the very beginning of Traverse City, people valued books. Libraries grew from tiny collections in odd places to the beautiful and welcoming places we have now. Heather Shumaker has created a well-researched history of the growth of libraries in Grand Traverse County. Full of photographs, this is an informative and beautiful history of libraries in Grand Traverse County that now provide more than books to our citizens.
—Donna Hornberger, retired librarian, past president of League of Women Voters-Grand Traverse Area, and past president of Peninsula Community Library Board of Directors.

This book is a local history treasure packed with detailed facts and fascinating stories about Traverse City’s two library buildings. UPDATE: generous donors helped us raise the $3,000 needed for the matching gift from Friends of TADL! Thanks to all who chipped in! We have almost enough funds to cover publishing coasts. All proceeds go to the Local History Collection at TADL.

The Friends of the Traverse Area District Library (FTADL) have offered $3,000 to CRSTAL as a 1-to-1 match for money CRSTAL raises from the community. We are gratified to receive this great endorsement from FTADL and are working hard to be eligible for this very generous matching grant.

Funds are to be used to cover publishing costs. To make a donation online, visit www.uwnwmi.org/crstal or see our About page to learn how to send a check to support this effort.
