Every Memorial Day and Veterans Day, we see the red poppy worn in honor of those who served and sacrificed. But many people don’t know the powerful story behind it.
The poppy became a symbol of remembrance after World War I. In the battle-scarred fields of Belgium and northern France — known as Flanders Fields — bright red poppies began to grow among the graves of fallen soldiers.
Inspired by this sight, Canadian military physician Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote the famous poem In Flanders Fields in 1915:
“In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row…”
The poem touched hearts around the world and the red poppy soon became an international symbol of remembrance, sacrifice, and hope.
Today, wearing a poppy is a simple but meaningful way to honor the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom — and to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.
Lest We Forget. 🇺🇸🌺
