⚽🚒 A soccer ball. A well-loved toy fire engine.

At first glance, they might seem out of place in a historic cemetery. But to one little boy, they’re gifts for his grandfather.

The fire engine has remained by the gravesite for more than a year. The soccer ball arrived a few months ago—a quiet reminder of the moments they may have shared together. Since his grandfather was from Cuba, perhaps kicking a soccer ball back and forth was one of the memories that connected them.

As the world comes together to celebrate the beautiful game this summer, we’re reminded that the most meaningful matches aren’t always played in stadiums. Sometimes they’re played in backyards, parks, or front lawns—with grandparents, parents, and children creating memories that last a lifetime.

At Prospect Hill Cemetery, we see those memories reflected every day in the flowers, toys, stones, and mementos families leave behind. They are simple expressions of love that continue long after a final goodbye.

💚 Every item tells a story. Every visit keeps a memory alive. And every memory reminds us that love continues to find ways to be seen.

There’s something special about finding a place where history and nature exist side by side.

As summer settles in, Prospect Hill Cemetery offers a quiet escape in the middle of Towson—a place where towering trees provide shade, birdsong replaces city noise, and every path tells a story that spans generations.

Whether you come to honor a loved one, explore local history, or simply enjoy a moment of reflection, Prospect Hill is open to all and welcomes every visitor.

By preserving these grounds today, we ensure that future generations can continue to experience both the history and the tranquility that make this place so unique. 💚

On June 3, 1944 — just three days before D-Day — Collier’s magazine featured Louise Mays Small (pictured right) placing a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery.
Louise served in Panama and later near Arlington, Virginia, where she cared for wounded German POWs. She left the Army in 1946 as a 1st Lt. Her story shows how the war effort was not just fought overseas but lived every day by those who served at home and abroad.

At Prospect Hill Cemetery, we are honored to preserve the legacy of women like Louise. Protecting our historic grounds ensures their memory — and the memory of all those laid to rest here — endures for generations.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day

Today, we pause to remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

At Prospect Hill Cemetery, their stories are carried in names etched in stone and in the flags that mark their resting places.

This is a day of reflection—for families, for visitors, and for a community honoring a shared sacrifice.

We are grateful to all who take time to remember.

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Roger Gookin 🌟

Meet Roger Gookin, co-chair of Prospect Hill Cemetery’s Property Oversight Committee and a dedicated volunteer for the past 10 years.

Roger first became involved with PHC when he and his family began planning their final arrangements. In the process, they discovered what he calls “a gem hidden in our backyard.” For Roger, Prospect Hill is more than just a cemetery—it is “peaceful like a garden.”

One of his proudest contributions has been strengthening ties with the Towson Precinct police, which prevents unwanted activity on the grounds. He also treasures the natural beauty of the cemetery, especially the huge yellowwood tree when it blooms—a favorite stop for resident and migratory birds.

When asked what he would share with the public about Prospect Hill Cemetery, Roger said: “It is a peaceful garden park that deserves perpetual care for future generations to enjoy in downtown Towson.”

We are grateful for Roger’s leadership and dedication. You can help continue Roger’s work—your donation supports the maintenance of the grounds, preserves the stories, and protects this sacred place for generations to come: https://bit.ly/450tI02

🇺🇸 Join Us for our Annual Memorial Day Tribute 🇺🇸

Each year, we honor the more than 500 veterans buried at Prospect Hill through a powerful tradition of remembrance.

On Saturday, May 23, Scouts from Troop 828 will join us to place American flags at each veteran’s grave—creating a field of flags that honors service, sacrifice, and legacy.

We welcome the community to attend the brief ceremony or visit throughout the morning to witness this meaningful tribute.

There are so many quiet acts of love that happen every day at Prospect Hill Cemetery—and this tree is one of them. 🌳

Planted near her husband’s gravesite, this beautiful tree has become something deeply personal to one of our most dedicated volunteers, Dawn Slaughter. Through every season, Dawn lovingly cares for it—watering it by hand, planting flowers beneath it, and ensuring it continues to grow and thrive.

But her care doesn’t stop there.

As Co-Chair of our Property Committee, Dawn works tirelessly across the cemetery, helping preserve and maintain the grounds for generations to come.

This blooming tree is more than a sign of spring—it’s a living symbol of remembrance, devotion, and the incredible impact of volunteers like Dawn.

At Prospect Hill, preservation doesn’t happen by chance—it happens because of people who care.

If you’ve ever wondered how you can make a meaningful difference, we’d love to have you join us. 💚

The azaleas are in bloom at Prospect Hill Cemetery, bringing color back into the landscape for another season. 🌸

Scattered among historic stones and tree-lined paths, these blooms are a reminder that even places rooted in memory continue to change with time.

Spring is a beautiful season to visit—whether for a quiet walk, a moment of reflection, or simply to take in the natural beauty of the grounds.

As a nonprofit cemetery, we are grateful for the community that helps us care for this space year after year. 💚

🌎 Earth Day at Prospect Hill Cemetery

At Prospect Hill, spring doesn’t just arrive—it unfolds across a landscape shaped by both history and nature.

Trees leafing out over historic stones. Birds moving through quiet branches. New growth rising in spaces that have stood for generations.

This is one of Towson’s most enduring green spaces—cared for not only as a cemetery, but as part of the community’s natural environment.

Preserving a place like this is ongoing work, made possible through steady care and community support.

This Earth Day, we simply invite you to notice it—to walk the grounds, take in the season, and experience Prospect Hill in a new light. 💚

📣 We have exciting news to share! 📣

Prospect Hill Cemetery was recently featured by WBAL-TV 11 Baltimore for our ongoing work to locate unmarked graves using modern technology—ground-penetrating radar.

This important effort allows us to uncover hidden history, restore dignity to those who may have been forgotten, and provide families with long-overdue answers.

It’s a powerful example of how preservation and innovation come together to honor the past—and ensure these stories are never lost.

We are deeply grateful to WBAL for helping share our story.

In the heart of busy downtown Towson lies a quiet green oasis off York Road.
