across Baltimore County. In Baltimore County, historic preservation includes:

• Economic development
• Neighborhood revitalization
• Stewardship of irreplaceable architecture and landscapes
• Encouraging smart growth and sensitive development
• Promoting Adaptive Reuse of historic buildings
• Fostering and advancing environmental stewardship through reuse and
rehabilitation of historic buildings to reduce landfill space and reduce carbon

• Helping senior-citizen owners of historic homes age in place

Historic communities and towns are inherently walkable yet we widen roads and demolish building stock to sprawlify. How is this good for us ?

A funny thing I have noticed throughout the years working with communities.

Everyone vacations in walkable places.

Charleston. Savannah. New York. Chicago. Europe. Any historic downtown.

They love it. Post photos. Talk about how nice it is to just walk around and not worry about driving. How charming everything is.

Then they come home and demolish a building for parking.

They’ll spend thousands of dollars to visit walkable places but won’t allow them to exist in their own town.

You already know what works. You pay to experience it every year.

Stop tearing it down at home.

Join Andrew Alcarese of Dixon’s Antiques for a deep dive into the world of 19th-century American furniture. Andrew will discuss the pros and cons of restoring an original finish versus starting fresh with a full refinish, sharing photos of past projects to show how to identify wood types, judge quality, and decide the best path for preservation.

We’ll also talk shop about the specific tools and repairs needed to bring these period pieces back to life without losing their history. Whether it’s a simple cleaning or a total overhaul, you’ll learn exactly what to look for before the first tool touches the wood.

Preservation Alliance Awarded Grant

We're happy to announce that Preservation Alliance of Baltimore County was awarded a $27,778.00 grant from the Baltimore Community Foundation to support our Aging in Place, Aging in History program.

With these funds, we were able to expand our assistance to limited-income Baltimore County Senior Citizen homeowners to help them with needed repairs, like roofs and restoring windows, to their historic homes. Preservation Alliance is very grateful for the Baltimore Community Foundation and CEO and President Dr. Shanaysha Sauls' support.

Our goal is to preserve our County's irreplaceable historic buildings and help our Senior neighbors, the stewards of our communities, stay in their beloved historic homes. In 2025 when were able to assist 7 members of our community with much needed roof replacements and safety repairs.

We are worked in partnership, and pooled and combined funds with, on this project with Civic Works, Rebuilding Together Baltimore and the Baltimore Department of Aging. To qualify, the applicant(s) must be over 62, own a home built before 1945 (the house does NOT necessarily need to be listed on any national nor local historic registry), and, as a single person, make no more than $42,800 yearly, or $48,000 as a couple. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

While the program was open to all who fit this criteria, we were especially focused on communities in the Eastern part of Baltimore County, like Dundalk, affected by the Key Bridge collapse.

Also, please consider directly donating to our Aging in Place program to support historic home repairs for those who fall slightly beyond the guidelines for this program, but still need assistance.

Preservation Alliance Awarded 1772 Grant

Preservation Alliance of Baltimore County is honored and grateful to have received a grant from The 1772 Foundation.

The 1772 Foundation, in cooperation with the National Preservation Partners Network, awarded us a $16,000 historic properties redevelopment programs (HPRPs). The grant funds historic preservation organizations' projects to conduct a feasibility study.

Also known as revolving funds, HPRPs are enterprising programs that proactively use real estate techniques (options, purchase/resale, easements, tax credits, etc.) to protect and rehabilitate endangered properties.

Since 2006, The 1772 Foundation has been a leading proponent of HPRPs, recognizing their positive impact on community economic development and neighborhood revitalization.Ethiel Garlington, executive director of The 1772 Foundation says, “We continue to be impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit of preservation practitioners across the country, who are putting market-based solutions to work in order to save more historic places.”

Dear Fellow Preservationists

Do you have any Crabapple trees on your property?

We're looking to promote this beautiful historic, though currently underappreciated, flowering & fruiting tree.

Once dotting historic landscapes, big & small, these beneficial, to birds, bees, & other wildlife, trees are woefully underplanted nowadays.
