New research from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation puts a number on something educators have sensed for a while: young investors are getting their financial information online — and it's costing them.

The study found 61% of investors aged 18–34 have made an investment decision based on a social media personality's recommendation, compared to just 6% of investors 55 and older. But confidence and knowledge don't line up — social-media-informed investors answered only 42% of questions correctly on an objective investing knowledge quiz, while 63% rated their own knowledge as high.

It's a strong case for building financial confidence before students are making their first investing decisions off a stranger's video, not after.

In 1949, business leaders, economists, and educators came together around a simple idea: train teachers in economics, and students will learn it too.

That coalition became today's Council for Economic Education. Maryland's council has carried the same work forward for more than 70 years. Today MCEE is a CEE affiliate based at Towson University, and CEE has named it State Council of the Year.

The model hasn't changed. Equip the educator, and the impact reaches every student in the room. That's more than 2,250 educators and 25,000 students across Maryland.

Our partnerships with Maryland school systems are essential to advancing MCEE's mission of equipping students with the financial and economic knowledge they need to succeed! We were delighted to be invited to present at the fall meeting of the Maryland Association of Career and Technology Administrators (MCTA), held at the Frederick County Public Schools Career and Technology Center. It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss the proposed updates to Maryland's Financial Literacy Standards, connect with education leaders from across the state, and explore how MCEE can support school systems in integrating more personal finance and economics education into Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

Thank you to MCTA for the invitation and for the important work you do to prepare Maryland students for success in their careers and beyond!

Join MCEE on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 7:00–8:00 PM ET for Economic Uncertainty Through the Looking Glass: The Complex Drivers of the Maryland Economy, a free webinar with two Towson University economists:
