It takes a village to make a cleaner, greener Woodlawn, and we are kicking off a new program on Saturday 10/24 at the Calico Cat Cafeā€™s Fall Fest!

NeighborSpace is working with schools, community associations, and other partners to design pollinator gardens and lead educational programs in community spaces around Woodlawn.

Join us for a whole suite of fun fall activities including a visioning session with the Neighborhood Design Center where you can make your voices heard on what you would like the pollinator gardens to look like!

Our bird monitoring program reached a milestone this fall - a volunteer bird monitor at Tollgate Wyndham Preserve reported our first Ruby-throated Hummingbird, which represented the 100th species of bird recorded across NeighborSpace sites! She also reported three other species that had never been seen at Tollgate Wyndham, bringing that particular preserveā€™s total species up to 62.

This is the power of many eyes and why we would love for you to be a part of our bird monitoring program. Beginners are welcome, so if you're interested in birds, please reach out to learn how to get started!

We wrapped up our fall bird walks on Saturday at Volz Neighborhood Park with a walk that was equal parts soggy, birdy, and fun! Special shoutouts to Baltimore Bird Club for including us in their fall calendar this year, and to the four intrepid birders who would not be deterred by the rain! Our birders were rewarded for their bravery with views of a stunning male Black-throated Blue Warbler and the always adorable Ruby-crowned Kinglet among many others.

Our tours may be over for the fall, but there are many birds to come! We are nearing the halfway point for southbound bird migration and the fall color is just starting to peek through at Volz. So get out there and explore the parks and if youā€™re interested in contributing to our community science efforts and becoming a bird monitor, please reach out to us at [email protected]!

Who hosts the best conferences? Maryland land conservationists, of course!

Last week, land trust staff and partners from across the state gathered at Forever Maryland's annual Policy Summit to discuss priorities and messaging for the upcoming legislative session. Forever Maryland is the nonprofit founded to promote and advance land conservation statewide through education, advocacy and outreach.

The Summit is an excellent opportunity for NeighborSpace and fellow land trusts to prepare for the session, learn from each other - and, yes, network on the beach.

If you are interested in learning about birds and contributing data that helps inform local conservation efforts, join us this Saturday! NeighborSpace's final bird walk of the fall is coming up this Saturday (10/3, 8-9:30am) at Volz Neighborhood Park in Middle River!

Shortly after the walk, we will be at the Essex Public Library hosting our second of three birding workshops of the fall (10/3, 11am-12pm).

This season we have been partnering with Baltimore Bird Club to introduce birders to our sites and start to build up our bird monitoring efforts. Volunteer bird monitors help us to better understand our sites and inform management decisions to maximize the benefits to both our neighbors and the wildlife we support.

New birders are welcome! Birders of all experience levels can help us help the birds.
