Recently at Volz Park, we spotted a friend hopping across the forest floor as we removed invasive wavyleaf basketgrass. This frog, while small in size, is actually a full-grown adult Wood Frog!

We've seen many tadpoles and metamorphs of this species in and around the vernal pools at Volz Park, but have only ever heard the larger adults as they call into the evening. In early spring, we posted a video that captured the chorus of Wood Frogs calling at this very site. Maybe this one was part of the call, or one of the audience!

A new interesting find for this week comes to us in the form of a Katydid! You may be familiar with this large, noisy insect as a voice in the choir on warm summer nights. These insects are well known for leaf mimicry, and this one was trying to remain camouflaged among the spicebush leaves as it was photographed.

Sadly, this characteristic species is becoming more uncommon to hear on summer nights, particularly in suburban and urban areas, as we continue to remove precious habitat. You can do your part to help us conserve these insects and their various different species by planting native perennials and shrubs in your yard. A native tree or two wouldn't hurt either!

As a land trust, NeighborSpace is in the “forever” business. We don’t just protect and improve local green spaces - we care for them year after year. NeighborSpace now protects 116 acres across 22 green spaces and provides walkable access to nature for more than 37,500 residents.

Today, we're inviting you to become a NeighborSpace member and help sustain this work for the years to come.

We are preparing our Annual Report, showing the progress we have made over this last fiscal year. Join our membership by September 10th and receive your own printed copy, as well as a shoutout in next year's report!

While at Volz Park in Middle River recently, we discovered a little fairy door placed at the root of a large tree just off the path. You never know what you're going to find when out for a hike!

The next time you visit Volz, stop and check it out!

While surveying storm damage at Volz Park, NeighborSpace staff stumbled across a new pond created from the crater left by a fallen tree. This pond was full of Pickerel frogs, a beautiful native amphibian that enjoys wetland habitats, small ponds, and riparian areas.

If you walk close to this pond, you'll be greeted with half a dozen plops from large Pickerel frogs escaping into the water. While we are currently managing downed trees in an effort to restore the path, this pond will still be present for some time, and we encourage folks to stop by and check it out!
