What an extraordinary few days at the 20th Reach to Recovery International Conference in Kuala Lumpur (26–28 June)! This conference brings together women with lived experience of breast cancer from every corner of the globe. Being in a room with that much courage, wisdom and determination is humbling.

While attending, I had the privilege of delivering three talks on: Breast cancer-related lymphoedema — what is it and how can it be prevented and managed; The evidence for exercise therapy in breast cancer care; and The role of exercise for women living with metastatic breast cancer, and hearing brilliant talks from friend and colleague, Dr Janine Porter-Steele OAM, among many others. However, what stood out across the 3 days of talks and workshops were the initiatives of women across the world to reduce the impact of breast cancer in their own countries, particularly around improving access to screening and early detection for communities disadvantaged by geography or circumstance. The other common thread, was the power of peer connection and support, with this focus championed by current and past-presidents of Reach to Recovery, Leonie Young and Cathy Hirsch.

A huge thank you to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia and their President Dato' Dr Saunthari Somasundaram, for the warmth and care they brought to hosting this event.

For three days in Kuala Lumpur, breast cancer survivors were not the audience, they were the reason the conference existed. Fresh from my peer learning visit with the Philippine Cancer Society, I travelled directly to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to participate in the 20th Reach to Recovery International....

The 20th Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference concluded today in Kuala Lumpur! RRI extends a sincere thank you to the National Cancer Society Malaysia and the many speakers and delegates who made the conference a resounding success! Congratulations to Jo Lovelock, Australia, who was awarded RRI’s Health Professional Medal for her outstanding support of the Reach to Recovery movement. Congratulations also to Sandra Samuels, Jamaica, who received the Terese Lasser award for her invaluable contributions toward developing and expanding the reach of Reach to Recovery Jamaica.
