This Wednesday, October 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., is our Halloween at the Old Jail event at the Bradford County Historical Society. Come dressed in costume and trick-or-treat throughout two floors of the museum! Open to all kids from across Bradford County. See the old Bradford County Jail decorated for Halloween and look for some surprises along the way. Don't miss the fun!

We can't wait for this year's event! Over 300 children and adults attended last year. We will have new surprises in store and a lot of candy waiting. Mark your calendar and join us. Families from across Bradford County are invited to bring their children for a safe trick-or-treat event and a chance to learn about local history! Anyone interested in donating toward the cost of candy may make a donation at https://bradfordhistory.org/support and donors will be acknowledged in the next issue of The Settler magazine.

A large crowd attended our final Friday Night at the Museum program for 2026 last night. David Lenington presented "Special Interest Cars of Bradford County: 1975 and Before". As a part of this event, Mr. Lenington has compiled a beautiful full-color hard-cover book featuring photos of all the cars that were photographed for this program along with details about them. Those whose cars were photographed received a free copy. BCHS has a limited supply of these books available for purchase at $35.00 plus tax. If supplies last, we will soon add it to our online store.

Coming this Friday night! The final Friday Night at the Museum program for 2026. Don't miss it!

The Bradford County Historical Society will host a program titled, “Special Interest Cars in Bradford County – 1975 and Before,” scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2026, at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated. To reserve a seat, participants are requested to register by calling 570-265-2240 or by email at [email protected].

Join us for a captivating PowerPoint presentation presented by David Lenington showcasing 40 remarkable special-interest automobiles owned by Bradford County residents. This unique program highlights rare, historic, and beautifully preserved vehicles, including: a 1969 Camaro Super Sport Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Edition; a 1966 Corvette Stingray wrapped in cloth/plastic and stored for 42 years; a 1964 Studebaker Avanti, one of 809 built; a 1951 MG TD; and a 1930 Model A Ford donated to Troy Farm Museum. From American muscle to European elegance and Depression-era craftsmanship, each vehicle has its own fascinating story. Whether you're a lifelong car enthusiast or simply enjoy local history, this presentation offers a memorable look at automotive heritage right here in Bradford County.

This presentation is part of the 2026 Friday Night at the Museum programming series that is held monthly from May through October. Each event is held in the Great Room at the Bradford County Historical Society, located at 109 Pine Street, Towanda, PA. The museum is open a half-hour prior to the event. Access to live streams of programming is available to members of the Society.

This week, the Bradford County Historical Society welcomed a visitor from a far off state, and we are consistently grateful for the donations and shared memories we receive. As high schools emerged, some students pursued further education beyond the eighth grade, exemplified by a train ticket belonging to Ruth Dunning, who traveled between Dunning (train station in South Creek Township) and Troy to attend high school. Following her education at Mansfield, Ruth taught in one-room schools, including Checkerville, before marrying and starting a family. She lived a remarkable life, reaching the age of 101, and we extend our appreciation to her descendants for sharing memorabilia and photographs with us.
