Adjusting Plow Points: The Grit Behind 1930s Industrial Farming

In May 1939, legendary documentary photographer Russell Lee traveled to a massive 4,900-acre mechanized farm near Ralls, Texas. Amid the vast West Texas plains, he captured a quiet but vital moment of daily field labor: a worker crawling beneath a heavy implement to adjust the plow points on a tractor-drawn, four-row planter.

This single archival record from the Library of Congress tells an incredible story about the grit it took to run early automated farms.

Plow points—often called sweeps or shares—are the sharp metal pieces at the bottom of each row unit. As the tractor pulled this massive machine through the dry Texas dirt, these points sliced open clean, even rows for seed placement.

Keeping them perfectly aligned was a relentless battle. If a single point wore down or shifted even slightly out of place, the furrow depth would fail.

Seeds planted too shallow would dry out under the blazing Panhandle sun. Seeds planted too deep wouldn't sprout at all.
Laborers had to routinely slide under the heavy steel frame in the dirt, using wrenches to loosen mounting bolts, reset the pitch of the metal points, and torque them tightly back into line.

This specific moment captures a massive turning point in American agriculture. During the late 1930s, gasoline-powered tractors were rapidly replacing horses and mules. While this shift let farmers plant crops faster than ever before, it also meant everyday farmhands had to transition overnight into mechanical troubleshooters.

Does your family have roots in early mechanized farming? What kind of vintage machinery did your family work with?

Judy Dustin Groesbeck of California, who grew up in the Saxon community, visited SCIHS to view the quilt stitched by her great-great-great-grandmother Hannah Fuller. The quilt, in the Courthouse Steps (Log Cabin version) pattern, has intricate hidden stitches. She also saw her ancestor’s large spinning wheel located in the cabin.
Thanks to Don Schmidt for giving Judy and her husband a private tour today.
