Are you passionate about creating opportunities for women and girls in our community? We'd love to have you join us.

The Northwest CT Community Foundation Women & Girls Fund is seeking dedicated volunteers to serve on our Executive Committee. We are especially looking for individuals who are ready to step into leadership roles on our Development Committee and Program Committee.

Whether your strengths are fundraising, community engagement, planning programs, or bringing people together, your talents can make a lasting impact.

As a member of our Executive Committee, you'll help guide initiatives that invest in the power of women and the dreams of girls throughout Northwest CT.

The Women & Girls Fund Period Product Program (WGPPP) packing parties bring friends together for a great cause. Recently, Northwest CT Community Foundation Women & Girls Fund committee member, Kathy Kinane (second from right), gathered her neighbors in her home to continue our practice of providing period products for women and girls throughout Northwest CT. We do this with the help of the Diaper Bank of CT, Jack Casey, Petricone’s Apothecary and the Rotary Club of Torrington and Winsted.

In late September, we gathered together with several of our founders as well as our most active supporters to celebrate the Northwest CT Community Foundation's Women & Girls Fund with a Founders & Friends Breakfast— honoring where we began, how far we've come, and the incredible community that makes it all possible.

Special thanks to founding members Judi Armstrong and Ellen Ebbs for joining us and reminding us how one great idea can grow into something extraordinary. 💛 To every founder, friend, volunteer, and supporter: thank you for believing in the power of women and girls.

Today is International Equal Pay Day—a day to raise awareness of the gender pay gap, recognize the economic inequalities women continue to face around the world, and encourage action toward equal pay for work of equal value.

We know that financial literacy is the key to independence and a livable wage. The Northwest CT Community Foundation Women & Girls Fund initiated a Financial Literacy program in partnership with Head Start in Torrington and sponsored by the Torrington Savings Bank to provide a financial literacy curriculum to families in the Head Start program. The Women & Girls Fund is making strides to continue programs like these for women in the Northwest Corner, with additional partnerships forming this fall.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT!

This month, we're excited to spotlight our Northwest CT Community Foundation Women & Girls Fund Chair, Fran Stoffer!

Fran has been a dedicated leader of the Women & Girls Fund for many years, serving on every committee and as Chair for the past four years. She is deeply committed to the Fund’s mission of investing in the power of women and the dreams of girls across Northwest CT.

During her tenure, Fran’s passion and outreach have helped expand the Fund’s impact, including support for LIVE GIRL’s leadership development programs for middle and high school students and the Fund’s ongoing effort to provide period products to area food banks.

Fran’s commitment to community extends beyond the Fund. She is involved with the New Hartford Land Trust, where she leads nature exploration activities at Brodie Park during summer camp, and serves on the New Hartford Historic District Commission. She holds a BA in Linguistics and Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts and an MA in Education from Wesleyan University, and spent her career in education as a teacher and Director of Professional Development.

As backpacks are packed and buses start rolling, the Northwest CT Community Foundation Women & Girls Fund is celebrating another year of investing in education across the Northwest Corner. From scholarships that help women advance, to financial literacy programs, and partnerships with organizations that champion middle and high school girls — our fund is proud to open doors to opportunity, one student at a time.

Meet Sara from the Goshen Food Pantry; Alexandra from Community Health and Wellness; and Susan from Friendly Hands. They are smiling because they are the happy recipients of bags of period products that the Northwest CT Community Foundation Women & Girls Fund donated and delivered to their organizations. It's all part of WGPPP-the Women & Girls Period Product Project. Every month volunteers gather for a packing party, and then Executive Committee members drop off the bags to a dozen food banks and non-profits in the Northwest Corner. Want to help? EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT!

This month, we're excited to spotlight Executive Committee member Michele Sok!

Michele is a strategic operations leader with more than a decade of experience spanning both the nonprofit and corporate sectors. As Head of Operations at Rescue Agency, Michele leads organizational change initiatives, operational excellence, and cross-functional collaboration. Throughout her career, she has focused on building strong organizations, developing people, and creating meaningful impact.

Her commitment to service extends well beyond her professional experience. Michele currently serves on the boards of the Diaper Bank of Connecticut, Covenant to Care for Children, and as an Advocate for KidsPlay Children's Museum as well as serving as Co-Vice Chair of the Torrington Democratic Town Committee. She is also a past President of the Junior League of Hartford, where she championed volunteerism and community impact initiatives while helping build women leaders.

As one of the newest members of the Women & Girls Fund Executive Committee, Michele serves as the chair of the Fund Development committee and is inspired by the Fund's focus on empowering women and girls across Northwest Connecticut. As a mother of a four year old daughter, Michele strives to create a world for her daughter and all girls that breaks down barriers so that they can thrive.

When she isn't working or volunteering, Michele enjoys running, playing tennis, and spending time with her husband and two young children.
