Giving back to our community is priceless

A former Los Angeles county sheriff’s deputy and now currently working

as a Surgical Technologist, back in May of 2017, while helping a fellow co-worker open an O.R. room in which large instrumentation trays were being used, I noticed the surgical wraps from these were being thrown away (these wraps are water repellent, heat absorbent and later discovered the wraps were machine washable) I had a flashback from my days working as a deputy where my last assignment was at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. Near the hospital, I would often see homeless people sleeping on the ground. This image inspired me to see what I had in front of me and gave me the idea to make something to help the homeless. I remember telling one of my co-workers,” I can make something from these wraps; I’m taking these home”. I took two of the wraps home, took my sewing machine out and created a sleeping mat. I attached elastic loops on one end in order for them to be rolled up and easily transported (resembling a yoga mat). I brought the sleeping mat to work and pitched my idea to the O.R. director. Once I went through the proper channels and received the go ahead to take the wraps; I started my mission to help those in need.

I named my project “du cOeuR” Project which means from the heart in French. The O and the R are capitalized as a nod to my co- workers (surgeons, nurses, surgical technologists, central services, support and anesthesia techs, hospital volunteers, and environmental services)who help me collect the wraps I need to make the sleeping mats for the homeless; without them it would not be possible.
