We had a wonderful first class today at the Southern Maine Women’s Reentry Center! This program is graciously funded in part by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council. Big thanks to Jon Courtney, a longtime supporter and facilitator for arts and humanities programming for incarcerated people and who has helped bring FLOR’s work to the center on multiple occasions.

We danced, practiced palmas, read and reflected on verses, talked, shared stories, and explored ideas for how we can shape this program—and its culminating presentation—together.

The program is led by FLOR’s director, Lindsey Bourassa, who shared:

“I am always so inspired by the residents at the Center—their willingness, curiosity, and openness to trying something new; the ideas and stories they share; the humor they bring; and the artistry they show right out of the gate. I can’t wait to see what we create together.”

FLOR is delighted to welcome Anna Giamaiou as our new Operations & Program Associate!

Born in New Jersey, Anna spent part of her childhood on the West Coast before settling in Maine in 2004. She is an original member of Olas Music and Dance and has been a volunteer with FLOR and an active member of Maine’s creative and performing arts community for many years. Anna graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 2011 with a degree in Sociology and brings extensive experience in operations, administration, customer service, and team leadership. Her background in management, administration, community engagement, and the performing arts makes her a wonderful addition to FLOR as we continue to grow.

When she’s not at FLOR, Anna enjoys baking, gardening, and spending time by the sea. She lives in S**o with her family.

The other day I witnessed the most magical thing. A monarch caterpillar was hanging from the leaf of a potted porch plant, ready to become a chrysalis. In that exact moment, the chrysalis began to emerge and the caterpillar, as it was, slowly disappeared, encased in fluorescent green. It took just four minutes—an incredible transformation from crawling creature to suspended jewel that will eventually hatch into a flying butterfly.

At FLOR, as our name implies, we like to take inspiration from nature, and summer is our chrysalis season, so to speak. It's a time to unpack the previous year and dig into planning the next, often from a picnic table in the garden, among the caterpillars and birdsong. Then, from September through May, FLOR blossoms into a new season of educational programs and community events.

What Is to Come...

As always, our work is guided by FLOR's mission to foster artistic, cultural, and community stewardship through the art of flamenco.

This coming season will focus on nurturing and developing our local professional and emerging flamenco artists and students while expanding our programming into more local and non-traditional spaces.

But before things get underway, FLOR will take a two-week summer break from August 10th – 21st. We'll be back on August 24th, ready for the season ahead.

While we're away, class registration will remain open on our website so you can reserve your spot for the fall 🌹

Flamenco Guitar Classes!

**Introduction to Flamenco Guitar**

Thursdays, 4 - 5 PM
September 10 - December 17

An introduction to the art of flamenco guitar, open to players of every level. Flamenco is built on a handful of core techniques: rasgueado, picado, arpeggio, and the driving rhythmic feel called compás. This group class is accessible to both newer players and those with prior experience. We will get grounded in posture, tone, and the basic right-hand strokes, while deepening our command on the instrument and expanding our repertoire. Alongside the playing, we'll cover the theory behind the music and the history and culture that shaped flamenco and the guitar's place within it.

Students should bring their own guitar. A nylon-string classical or flamenco guitar is ideal, but come as you are and we'll sort out the rest. Led by Bruno Panunzio, classical and flamenco guitarist and Artist Faculty in Guitar at the University of Southern Maine.
