On May 9th, FLOR and Mechanics’ Hall co-hosted FLOR’s first Artist Legacy Series featuring renowned flamenco dancer Liliana Morales.

Often described as a modern matriarch of flamenco, Morales shared rich, expansive stories drawn from over six decades in the field. Her reflections offered rare, first-hand insight into a life shaped by flamenco across continents.

In conversation with María Mazorra, Chair of FLOR, Liliana traced a legacy in flamenco filled with vivid, fun, and deeply human anecdotes—reflections on friendships with Paco de Lucía and Camarón de la Isla, her work with José Greco, the teachings of Mariquita Flores, Teresa Torkanowsky, and Maria Alba, her collaboration with and admiration for Roberto Lorca, and her experiences in renowned tablaos such as Café de Chinitas. Together, these stories revealed a life built through lived experience, artistry, and decades of accumulated knowledge.

Special thanks to María Mazorra for facilitating such a rich conversation; to , Gina Gamez and María Mazorra for the delicious empanadas; to Mechanics’ Hall for co-presenting this event with FLOR in their beautiful library; to all who joined us to listen and revel in such rich storytelling.

At FLOR, we love seeing community members carry what they’ve learned and created in the studio out into the wider community. ❤️

As an independent, community-led initiative, Cheryl Berman and Laura Moore brought flamenco to residents at the Park Danforth Assisted and Independent Living Community on April 29th, sharing rhythm, movement, music, and connection through an intimate performance experience.

Their visit created moments of joy, expression, and cultural exchange, and beautifully reflects how flamenco must ripple outward beyond the studio walls!

We’re so proud of Cheryl and Laura and inspired as always by the power of flamenco to foster community, creativity, and cultural appreciation wherever it goes - the three stewardships of our mission here at FLOR 🌹✨🪭💃🏻

May has been a busy month at FLOR, full of rich storytelling experiences.

Three weeks ago we hosted Laura Sanchez for her powerful multimedia, one-woman, danced flamenco monologue Welcome to Holland?! followed by a vibrant and moving artist and book talk about her newly published book Tulip Skin (which is available for purchase right here in Portland at Print Bookstore!)

Welcome to Holland?! followed the story of Laura, an immigrant mother navigating her own “Holland!?”, a life-altering situation after the birth of her second child.

Rather than focusing on what was lost, the piece celebrates what emerges — resilience, creativity, connection, and the ability to find joy and gratitude in
places we never imagined.

Thank you .sanchez.art for your vision and artistry.

Thank you and .bookstore for co-presenting this event with FLOR.

Thank you to all who attended and participated in the event and conversation.
