Shawnee County Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

The Shawnee County Campaign for Grade-Level Reading is housed at the United Way of Kaw Valley (formerly United Way of Greater Topeka). The Campaign for Grade Level Reading (CGLR) is a national collaborative effort that works to ensure low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school s

uccess and high school graduation—grade-level reading by the end of third grade. Shawnee County was one of the first communities to be a part of the national Campaign for Grade Level Reading and is led by United Way of Kaw Valley as it aligns directly with their Education work. Through a network of community organizations, the Campaign works to reduce the gaps in school readiness, chronic absenteeism, and summer learning loss for children in Shawnee County. Members of the Shawnee County Campaign for Grade Level Reading are: United Way of Kaw Valley, Boys and Girls Clubs of Topeka, Kansas Action for Children, Washburn University, Communities in Schools of Mid America, Kansas Appleseed, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Topeka Public Schools, Harvesters, Jayhawk Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, Auburn Washburn School District, Topeka Housing Authority, Shawnee County Parks and Recreation, Kansas Children's Service League, Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, Community Action Head Start,and TDC Learning Center.
