We are incredibly grateful to NPR’s Jonaki Mehta for highlighting both the final decision that was just reached in Texas v. Kennedy, and the work Judy’s League is engaged in on social media to spread awareness about this challenge to disability rights. A Texas district court judge just struck down language that codifies our right to receive services in the most integrated setting, and five states, supported by the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services, had advocated for that exact outcome. Thank you NPR for drawing attention to this issue, and the effect it could have on other cases where disabled people’s right to live at home with their loved ones is under attack. 🚨BREAKING: RFK Jr. and the DOJ are joining the five states still attacking Section 504 in asking for final judgment. They claim that federal regulations protecting disabled people's right to live, learn and work in our communities need to be struck down, and the decision from the judge is coming soon. These protections are decades old and we can’t afford to lose them, help us spread the word about these attacks on disability rights

Judy’s League President Kaleigh Brendle contacted NPR about the Texas v. Kennedy lawsuit and the threat it poses to disability rights. Not only did she hear back, but education reporter Jonaki Mehta came to New Jersey to collect footage of the community-based program that Kaleigh’s older brother, Cody, attends. Cody is Blind and autistic, and this program allows him to work in a supported environment and participate in activities like boating and dancing with his friends. In a digital story and radio broadcast NPR released today, Jonaki Mehta discusses how the Department of Justice is helping several states target community-based options that keep disabled people out of institutions. The story highlights how institutions are more expensive than community integration, and how they deny disabled people the freedom to live, learn, and work alongside their loved ones. Leading disability rights advocates, including Alison Barkoff and Jennifer Mathis, are also featured in the story, emphasizing how institutionalization would threaten the rights of millions of disabled people nationwide.
