Did you know that to celebrate the Fourth of July, Army installations hold a 50-gun salute in all 50 states?

Officially called the “Salute to the Union,” this powerful tradition dates back to July 4, 1777, when a warship in Philadelphia fired 13 guns in honor of the original colonies. By 1810, the U.S. War Department had officially chosen that the number of guns fired each year in the Independence Day salute should equal the number of states in the Union. The number was fixed at 50 rounds on July 4, 1960, when Alaska and Hawaii became states.

Tomorrow, the ceremony occurs at exactly noon, when active-duty artillery crews and state Army National Guard units across the country fire 50 blank rounds at intense, rapid-fire, five-second intervals. The whole tribute lasts just shy of four minutes, sending a unified roar of thunder across the country to celebrate American independence.
