π The data from families who shopped at the Southside Filling Station in August tells a story we cannot ignore.
π Here is what our neighbors shared with us:
π 22% were unemployed
π΅ 94% lived on less than $40,000 per year
π΅ 63% lived on less than $20,000 per year
π 16% did not have a high school diploma or GED
π Only 4% were receiving education or employment assistance
π 71% β seven out of every ten families β were food insecure
π₯ 26% had no health coverage
And this is not a 66605 problem. Last month, our shoppers came from 33 different ZIP codes. This is a community-wide reality.
These numbers make one thing clear: workforce development and education cannot simply be something we do. Employability and long-term stability must become the outcomes that everything we do feeds into.
Food access matters. Healthcare matters. Housing matters. Education matters. Neighbor Advocacy matters. But our work must also help families build the skills, support, and opportunities needed to move toward sustainable employment and lasting stability.
That is why, beginning September 28th, SENT is launching a new partnership with Washburn Tech to offer GED classes right here at Avondale East.
π GED Classes: Mondays and Wednesdays
π Free certification and credentialing courses at Washburn Tech: Tuesdays and Thursdays
This is more than a path to a GED. It is a bridge β from education to credentials, from credentials to employment, and from employment to greater stability. π
