πŸ“Š The data from families who shopped at the Southside Filling Station in August tells a story we cannot ignore.

πŸ‘‡ Here is what our neighbors shared with us:

πŸ“‰ 22% were unemployed
πŸ’΅ 94% lived on less than $40,000 per year
πŸ’΅ 63% lived on less than $20,000 per year
πŸŽ“ 16% did not have a high school diploma or GED
πŸ“š Only 4% were receiving education or employment assistance
πŸ›’ 71% β€” seven out of every ten families β€” were food insecure
πŸ₯ 26% had no health coverage

And this is not a 66605 problem. Last month, our shoppers came from 33 different ZIP codes. This is a community-wide reality.

These numbers make one thing clear: workforce development and education cannot simply be something we do. Employability and long-term stability must become the outcomes that everything we do feeds into.

Food access matters. Healthcare matters. Housing matters. Education matters. Neighbor Advocacy matters. But our work must also help families build the skills, support, and opportunities needed to move toward sustainable employment and lasting stability.

That is why, beginning September 28th, SENT is launching a new partnership with Washburn Tech to offer GED classes right here at Avondale East.

πŸ—“ GED Classes: Mondays and Wednesdays
πŸ—“ Free certification and credentialing courses at Washburn Tech: Tuesdays and Thursdays

This is more than a path to a GED. It is a bridge β€” from education to credentials, from credentials to employment, and from employment to greater stability. πŸ’™

Shawnee County’s students deserve classrooms led by experienced, supported, and committed teachers. But teacher turnover can disrupt learning, strain families, and weaken school culture β€” especially in high-poverty neighborhoods.

A leading cause?
🏠 Housing instability.

SENT’s new Teacher Housing Stability and Retention Initiative tackles this challenge head-on by helping educators become homeowners in the neighborhoods they serve. Our first investment will support twelve teachers with down payment or closing cost assistance β€” and we’re ready to do even more.

Now we’re inviting our community to step in with us.

✨ Matching partners can double the number of teachers served.
✨ Businesses can sponsor additional schools.
✨ Individuals can invest directly in teacher stability, student success, and neighborhood health.
✨ Foundations can help scale this into a citywide model.

As long as teachers follow the same guidelines β€” five years in a focus school, primary residence in the home, and participation in SENT’s wraparound support β€” we are prepared to replicate this model wherever partners are ready to invest.

If you care about public education…
If you care about equitable neighborhoods…
If you care about long-term transformation in Southeast Topeka…

Then this is your invitation.
Let’s build a stronger, fairer, and more vibrant Topeka β€” starting with the teachers who shape our future.

Message us to learn more about partnership opportunities.

πŸŽ’ Back-to-school season brings more stress than most families expect, and stress is one of the most well-documented risk factors for substance use among young people.

New schedules, shifting social dynamics, academic pressure, and the end of summer structure all arrive at once. For many students, this transition is one of the most emotionally demanding stretches of the entire year.

πŸ“Š What the research shows:

2 in 5 U.S. high school students (40%) reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2023, a figure that has climbed 10 percentage points over the past decade.

SAMHSA identifies back-to-school transitions as a key stress point for youth, noting that awareness of mental health and potential for substance misuse should be a core part of every family's back-to-school preparation.

Research on adolescent transitions to high school specifically documents increased social and academic stress, less adult monitoring, and greater exposure to substances as factors that elevate risk during the transition period.

🧠 Why transitions increase vulnerability:

Predictability decreases
Social dynamics shift quickly
Expectations rise before support systems are re-established
Unstructured time increases without familiar routines in place

🌱 What reduces that risk:
Consistent relationships. Familiar adults. Safe places to land. Structured time with a sense of purpose.

Prevention during back-to-school season isn't about eliminating stress; it's about making sure young people aren't navigating it alone, without tools, or without connection.

That's the window. And that's exactly when prevention has to show up.

πŸ’š We recently received this message from someone in our community. We’re sharing it anonymously, but the impact speaks for itself:

β€œI’ve been coming to SENT for 8 months. I met one of your employees named Roe (a regular volunteer at the Southside Filling Station).

I’m disabled and need to use one of Walmart’s mobile carts. Roe saw how several people were blocking me from getting some coffee creamer. She gracefully stepped in and helped. She got my creamer, and we started chatting. She told me about SENT and how they could help me.

It’s sad how people sometimes see a disabled person and treat us poorly. Not SENT. They welcomed me with true warmth and compassion, asking how I was doing and if I needed any other assistance with their programs.

Delilah (one of your Community Health Workers) told me about the many other services you offer. Wow. She took my β€˜wish list,’ and I was amazed at how quickly each referral reached out to me.

What a blessing SENT is. To take an unused school site and turn it into so many programs that help the community.

Thank you for the amazing employees and programs you have that β€˜see us’ and show us that we’re worthy, and truly love their job helping us and making our lives better.”

Stories like this remind us why this work matters.

It’s about people feeling seen, supported, and connected πŸ’š
