The Bridge

The Bridge "...empowering Topeka youth to become servant leaders through mutually transforming relationships..." The Bridge is a Christian mentoring program.

Our mission is to empower Topeka children and youth to become servant leaders through mutually transforming relationships. Our vision is to meet kids and their families right where they are. We connect them with mentors during elementary school and follow them through high school graduation. We dream of partnering with churches across the city to send volunteer mentors into every elementary school

in Topeka. Recently, however, the leadership team has sensed a problem: some kids need more. The kids facing the most obstacles in life are the hardest to reach with volunteer mentors, especially during a pandemic. Leaders began to dream of a new way to serve the most vulnerable children and their families. In 2021 The Bridge will implement a new mentoring model designed to support the most vulnerable children and their families. This new program will match children facing the most obstacles in life with a salaried, professional mentor. Mentors will begin in kindergarten, and walk with each child through high school graduation, no matter what. These mentors will work with each child every week on our strengths based curriculum--things like resilience, integrity, and belonging.

Sometimes, perseverance comes from having a friend who works hard and shows you what’s possible. Other times, perseverance comes from having a friend who will urge you on when it hurts. Either way, overcoming hard things is easier when you’ve got a buddy!

Persistence is continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. Persistence is the core strength we focus on in March. Bridge mentors and lunch buddies are pretty great at persisting, and most of the time they seem to have fun too.

Perseverance is a noun. According to Webster, it means “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition”.

Bridge Kids have perseverance. In the past year, we have watched their accomplishments in sports reach levels that we would never have believed. We have watched their academic abilities grow in ways that have amazed us. We have watched them fight to have joy in spite of pain.

They inspire us to keep putting effort into what’s important, and it’s our joy to walk beside them as they do the same.

Here at The Bridge, we want a place where the whole family feels like they belong!

A place you belong just the way you are.
Before you try. Before you change. Before you get it “right.”
There is space for your thoughts, your feelings, your questions, and your dreams.
You are part of something good and kind,
and there is a place in it that only you can fill.

You are loved.
You are wanted.
You belong. 💛

Every month, in our Life Buddies program, we have a general focus called our Core Strengths. We plan activities and intentional conversations based on that month's theme. February's theme is "Belonging."

In a world where kids can feel so alone, even when surrounded by others, we want to make sure our kids feel seen, loved, and that they belong. They belong with us, their families and friends, and most importantly they belong with Jesus.
