January 25 through February 1, 2023 John C. Murray and Michelle Ramer visited Menno-Clinic, India, Inc. COVID 19 had prohibited board member travel to India for the past 4 years. It was wonderful beyond description to be back in Chiluvuru again. The clinic staff has exhibited such commitment and perseverance through the pandemic. While some services were cut back for safety of patients and staff, they maintained essential services continuing to serve the community through that difficult time. Most services have returned to normal operations with continued enhances safety measures in place.

One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to share a special supper for our staff and their families. Being together provided an opportunity for us to expression our gratitude for their ongoing service to the residents of Chiluvuru and surrounding areas and to speak a blessing on the continuing work going forward.

The gathering was also an opportunity to offer special recognition of Ammama (Olga's mother) for her faithful oversight of so many details of the clinic. She has offered herself tirelessly to this project including during the years of planning before the clinic opened. No one has sacrificed more for this project than Ammama.

In just a few months, Menno Clinic India will celebrate the completion of 20 years of service to the village of Chiluvuru. The vision began in the hearts of Subbarao and Olga Yarlagadda. The dedication ceremony in January of 2002 was a joyful celebration that this vision had become a reality. It brings even more joy to reflect on many lives that have been touched by work of the clinic. The lives that have been touched include our staff, each patient who has come through the doors, and those who have visited as guests. We pray that the work of the clinic has touched the lives of all who made a contribution to help make the clinic a healing and transformative presence in Chiluvuru.

Join us in this celebration on Saturday, November 13 when the video of the virtual curry bash is released. Try to make an Indian dish or two and watch together with a few family members or close friends.

Another special feature of the 2021 Virtual Curry Bash is a message from our primary physician, Dr. Titus. He will share with us from the Clinic. Watch for the link to the Curry Bash that will be released on Saturday, November 13.

Since we are virtual again this year, you will have to make your own curry. No Indian meal would be complete without some chai tea. Weldon and LuEtta Friesen always made the chai at our in person curry bash. Their recipe is a part of this post. Enjoy!

Don't forget to watch for the release of the 2021 Menno Clinic India Virtual Curry Bash on Saturday, November 13. One of the anticipated features of every curry bash is an inspirational message from Subbarao "Doc" Yarlagadda.

Doc and his wife Olga had a vision to provide health care in the rural Andhra Pradesh village of Chiluvuru. This is the village where Olga grew up. Her mother Varahalu, better known as Ammama (Telegu for grandma) lives in small quarters on the top floor of the clinic. She has volunteered her time providing administrative oversight of the clinic operation since the clinic opened.

Since we will be virtual again this year, you will need to make your own curry. This recipe is from board member Dr. Weldon Friesen.

Each year the Menno Clinic Curry Bash is an opportunity to celebrate the service of Menno Clinic India to the the village of Chiluvuru and surrounding areas of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is an opportunity to share food and fellowship and update our partners and donors of the current activities of the clinic and invite continuing support.

Once again this year this event will be virtual. The 2021 Curry Bash video will be released on Saturday, November 13.

In anticipation of this release, we encourage you to try one--or several--of the recipes that will be shared this week. Create your own curry meal as you watch the video.

To create the virtual fellowship we encourage you to post a message of blessing or encourage to our staff, or, if you have traveled to the clinic, share a memory or a picture of your experience there.

The first recipe comes from Olga Yarlagadda--

Cauliflower Curry

1 Cauliflower--Cut into 2 inch pieces
6 Red potatoes medium size cut into 4 pieces
4 Tomatoes chopped
1 Medium size onion chopped
1 or 2 Hot peppers sliced (depends how hot you like)
2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
2 Tablespoons Butter
1/4 cup Cilantro chopped 1/4 C
1 Cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon Garlic grated
1 teaspoon Ginger grated
1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
1 teaspoon Salt (more or less according to your taste)

Boil potatoes and cauliflower in salt water in separate batches and drain water. Do not over cook. They need to be crisp not mushy.

Heat oil and butter in large pan. Add cinnamon stick and hot pepper and onions. Fry for few minutes.

Add tomatoes and salt and turmeric put the lid . Cook on medium heat till tomatoes are well cooked. Make sure you do not loose all the liquid. If it happens add 1/4 c water.

When tomatoes are soft add ginger garlic paste and cook for a minute. Add chopped cilantro.

At this point taste and adjust salt (remember you boiled veg in salt . You can always add salt in the end)and take the hot peppers out.

Add boiled vegetables and gently mix. Cover and cook few minutes so vegetables can absorb the flavors .

You can add more ore less the ingredients according to your taste. There are no set measurements

Serve with rice or chapathi (tortilla)
