Let’s just say the over 120 kittens (and mama cats) in our care have been keeping our team pretty busy 😅

Check out just a few of the kittens safe and in one of our many lovely foster homes or at the Topeka Cat Cafe!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mama cats in our care!

It’s such a gift to be able to give them a safe indoor environment to raise their babies. And they make our foster families’ lives a lot easier!! No one raises healthy and happy kittens quite like a mama cat ❤️

We need help finding the perfect place for two older kittens we have in foster.

Black Forest and Lava Cake lived their entire lives (7 months) in a kennel with their Mom and three siblings before they came to Team Kitten.

After some time in foster it became clear that their lighter-coated siblings had received more interaction and were better socialized, but these two remain very scared and probably won’t thrive or be adopted as traditional indoor cats.

Black Forest and Lava Cake need a fully enclosed shop, a garage, or a business to live in. They are very playful which translates to a high prey drive - so we’re confident they would be good mousers! They unfortunately lack the survival skills to live outside or in a barn home.

The duo enjoys living alongside people, and even the occasional pet or two, but would prefer no other animals or rowdy children.

PLEASE share this post - you never know who could be looking for a couple of tuxedo friends to share their space with. Their adoption fees are waived!

Looking back at April, we are amazed by the change that our small rescue has accomplished.

Each of these numbers represents a life changed - a mama cat who is finally spayed, or a kitten who is spoiled in a home instead of trying to survive on the street.

We don’t receive any city or county funding. Everything we do is made possible by the faith and support of our wonderful community. This includes our stellar team of fosters and volunteers! Thank you for helping us make a difference 💕

P.S. Team Kitten just hit 1200 adoptions!! 🥳

Did you know we took in over 100 cats and kittens from Jackson county in 2025? A majority of those came from outdoor colonies. This adorable litter of six joined us in March from a colony in Holton. After spending a month in foster growing big and strong they are ready to find their forever homes!

Thank you Chardae for fostering Zennie, Asa, Handful, Apple Pay, Government Spending, and Petrichor ❤️

You can visit and adopt these kittens at the Topeka Cat Cafe.

A lot of requests we receive involve feral moms with kittens. For feral moms, the best choice is to leave her and babies alone. Even a grumpy mom is better than no mom when it comes to growing kittens. If they’re somewhere unsafe, you can try to make a new nest (crack a shed door or a garage door, or set up a cat house nearby). Or you may need to change how your dogs get their outside time, just for a couple of weeks! Moms move their nests often, and a small inconvenience for you can mean this family has a safe place for a short time.

Please DON’T put food near the nest. It will attract predators to where mom is hiding her babies. You can place food away from the nest. Pregnant and nursing mama cats need kitten food if possible, and lots of fresh water so they have energy to feed their babies and recover from birth. Just make sure it isn’t too close to where she’s caring for the kittens!

You’ll know if something is wrong if you hear the kittens crying. Well cared-for kittens are quiet.

It’s important to make sure that when you start feeding outdoor cats you have a plan in place. If you feed them, fix them! You must spay and neuter outdoor cats to prevent more kittens from being born. Only 25 percent of kittens born outside live to 6 months of age.

For kittens born to feral moms, we recommend trapping and spaying mom when babies begin eating, and bringing the kittens inside to socialize them.

Back in March we posted about a mom and kittens we took in from a colony in Portis, KS that Street Cats Club was working on.

Upon intake we discovered that the mama cat, Shelley, was likely at ten years of age or older. Meaning Shelley gave birth to 20-25 litters during her life, if not more. She’s spent almost half of her life pregnant 🤯 When not pregnant, she was raising kittens. One of the first things her foster noticed was how voracious she was, sometimes elbowing her kittens out of the way when wet food was put down. Our girl was HUNGRY.

We’re happy to say that she’s officially child free and spending her golden years enjoying copious wet food and a loving home. A bit about Shelley, now Banshee, from her adopter:

“She’s has settled in with plenty of personality. She has no problem “telling” me when I’m taking too long to open her food, or when to pet her, or when she thinks it’s time for us to go to bed. Despite being 11 years old and having very few teeth, she’s incredibly energetic and keeps up with (and even outpaces!) my younger kitties! Shes been a doll!”

Everyone loves kittens, but often times it’s the mama cats that pull most at our heart strings. Outcomes like these remind us of the impact saving even just one life can make ❤️

We wanted to take a second and highlight one of our indispensable fosters who makes what we do possible.

Shannon is entirely unflappable. She unflinchingly accepts the hardest kittens and pours her heart and energy into them. Her kittens go to work with her daily at Shawnee Animal Hospital and meet all the clients (both human and animal variety). The outcome is meticulously vetted, thoroughly socialized kittens who travel well and can thrive in any home.

A bit about Shannon in her own words:

“I have worked in Vet Med for 12 years and counting. Helping animals has always been my passion, and fostering for Team Kitten has given me the opportunity to extend my passion beyond work. Providing a safe place to some of the most vulnerable beings in the world and being a step in a kitten or cat's journey to becoming a happy and beloved part of someone’s life is beyond rewarding.”

We are so grateful to have her on our team. Thank you Shannon for all you do to improve the lives of countless animals in our community. ❤️

Below are two photos with some of her fosters at Shawnee Animal Hospital. The third photo is the final kitten of a colony she had been working on for three months. She caught them with her bare hands and a tube treat 😂
