With each passing day, an increasing number of SHPO offices are contending with significant challenges as a result of the federal delay to release FY25 funds previously appropriated by Congress to the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF).

We continue to barrel toward irreversible consequences, ultimately placing historic resources across the country at risk - ahead of 2026 which marks not only America’s Semiquincentennial, but also the 60th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, the 50th anniversary of the Historic Preservation Fund, and the 50th anniversary of the federal Historic Tax Credit program.

The future of our past depends upon:

1) Immediate release of delayed FY25 HPF funds by the Executive Branch

2) Congressional proposal, enactment, and swift distribution of adequate FY26 appropriations to the Historic Preservation Fund

Call to action! We need the public's help to save the Historic Preservation Fund. Please send letters to your senators or your direct contacts asking for help to save the FY25 and FY26 HPF funding!

Remarks from Katrina Ringler, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer:
“Congressional authorization for federal Historic Preservation Funds to SHPOs was approved in March. Notice to the SHPOs would generally be coming from the National Park Service by now asking for applications to receive that funding, but all indications are that the notice is still under review with the Office of Management & Budget. There is no word when we should expect the notice or when our applications might be processed and funds made available. Our contacts at the NPS have no updates to offer. Receiving this funding is critical to the continued operation of the Kansas SHPO through September.”

Our Kansas State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and SHPOs nationwide are at serious risk of losing funding - impacting jobs and preservation efforts all across the country. These offices administer grant funding and historic tax credits, and so much more. They provide educational opportunities, classes, seminars and support to property owners as they navigate historic preservation projects.

What does this mean? This means National Register nominations, Determinations of Eligibility, Federal Agency consultation, Section 106 review, and Tax Credit projects are all at risk of slowing down or ending entirely.

Our landmarks, nationwide, regionally and locally may cease to exist without preservation efforts.

Not only would this impact preservation, the wonderful people that work in these offices are our friends. Property owners, architects, engineers, historic consultants, and more work side by side with these fantastic people to help preserve properties that otherwise would be forgotten.

Reach out to your members of Congress and ask them to help facilitate the immediate approval of the FY25 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Historic Preservation Fund and subsequent review and approval of applications. We also encourage you to urge your member of Congress to support necessary funding for the Historic Preservation Fund.
