A global force for jazz, Charles Mingus was an accomplished musician and music advocate from the 1950s up until his passing in 1979. Known as a bassist, Mingus was also a talented pianist and went on to start his own "Jazz Workshop" - a group that enabled young composers to have their new works performed in concert and on recordings. 🎹

Born today in 1933, Nina Simone is one of the most iconic voices of the modern music era. An American pianist, singer, songwriter and more importantly a civil rights leader - Simone's influence is still felt in the music of today. 🖤

The Topeka Jazz Middle and High School jazz bands played their finale concert this past Sunday at White Concert Hall. Following the performances Topeka Jazz awarded 10 individual $500 scholarships for this summer. We’d like to personally thank Craig Treinen, Garrett Jones, and Coleman Scott for rehearsing and coordinating this program. A total of 27 students (11 middle school and 16 high school) participated from nine local schools.

Following the student performances the Topeka Jazz Workshop Band delivered a wonderful performance of their own.
