Last night jazz music was celebrated at the Sunflower Music Festival featuring a performance from The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra. Songs in the Key of KC brought the audience through the legacy and landscape of Kansas City jazz history - honoring musicians like Count Basie, Bobby Watson, and Bennie Moten.

A global force for jazz, Charles Mingus was an accomplished musician and music advocate from the 1950s up until his passing in 1979. Known as a bassist, Mingus was also a talented pianist and went on to start his own "Jazz Workshop" - a group that enabled young composers to have their new works performed in concert and on recordings. 🎹

The Topeka Jazz Middle and High School jazz bands played their finale concert this past Sunday at White Concert Hall. Following the performances Topeka Jazz awarded 10 individual $500 scholarships for this summer. We’d like to personally thank Craig Treinen, Garrett Jones, and Coleman Scott for rehearsing and coordinating this program. A total of 27 students (11 middle school and 16 high school) participated from nine local schools.

Following the student performances the Topeka Jazz Workshop Band delivered a wonderful performance of their own.
