Dear Fellow Topangans,
Spring is here and everything is bursting out all over – including our roadside
grasses. While things are still green, we want to enlist your aid in fulfilling our
community’s commitment to assist Caltrans by cutting the roadside vegetation. By
w**d whacking along your frontage on Topanga Canyon Boulevard – Our Main
Street – you will help keep Topanga poison-free and fire-safe, especially now with the road closed due to the slide
Together we can help the Fire Department’s mandate and ensure that
Caltrans will continue to use non-toxic clearing methods to maintain our roadsides
while preserving Topanga’s natural beauty and protecting our wildlife. Your
volunteer efforts make all the difference.
“Community Work for a Common Goal” is what we’re talking about! You’ve heard
of Topanga’s Trash Warriors, spearheaded by the Topanga Chamber and TASC, and
its two-ton, two-year effort to keep Topanga Forever Scenic. These volunteers
embody the community spirit that keeps Topanga vital and vibrant.
So does the TCB Roadside Committee, who spent six years entreating and
persuading Caltrans to manage vegetation without poisons while the Watershed
Committee, Chamber and Town Council worked to make Topanga a certified
wildlife habitat – a green, safe haven for our furry and feathered friends to flourish.
We hope that you, dear neighbors and friends, will join us as we keep Topanga free
from flames and herbicides. Here’s how you can help:
1. Break out the w**d whacker and cut back your Topanga Canyon Boulevard
grass growth 8-feet from the boulevard to no higher than 2-4 inches by June 1st
or sooner.
2. Work safe and observe proper precautions when using mechanical equipment
that may ignite dry brush. If possible, use a solar or electric w**d-whacker, and
have a water source nearby in case of emergencies. Personal safety is of upmost
priority for all our Topanga volunteers. Make sure whatever kind of w**d whacker
you use it does not have metal blades.
